Hi everyone, so I don't want to be that guy but it looks like I am due to the limited amount of time I have to get ready for this hunt. I drew the book cliffs bitter creek south archery tag after 12 years of applying in Utah. Excited is an understatement! I am turning over every leaf I can to find out any information I can about the unit. I have already poured over maps and called biologists, previous tag holders, and am talking to anyone who might have experience there. I am in Washington state and am going to try to make a quick trip down there this summer to scout. I realize that this is probably a once in a lifetime tag for me as I am sure that it will be another 20 years before I would draw again and that would put me in my early 60's which I will be still hunting but not nearly as hard as I can now. I have been bowhunting elk for 25 years and have done well. Never have hunted Utah, its always been a dream until now! I realize that there are a lot of guys on this site that have hunted Utah for elk and that is why I am posting. I am a do it yourself kind of guy and have been building up my equipment for the past few years in anticipation of drawing out in Utah; wall tent and everything for it, new pack, etc. Any help would be very appreciated. Never posted on a forum before and I hate to be that guy who comes on and asks for help first time out but my time is limited before I try and head down to scout so trying to gather as much info before I leave as possible. Thanks

First welcome to MM and congratulations on a very good tag. I have hunted that unit, but it was many years ago, so I am probably not much help. I will tell you to not hurry down here as we have a serious amount of snow still in our mountains, and access to where the elk might be during the hunt, may be a problem for another month or more.
Make sure you can get to where you want to go before you come!

LAST EDITED ON Jun-12-11 AT 11:16AM (MST)[p]Thanks bggmhntr. lol

Hi kawboy,

I drew the archery elk tag for Little Creek area in the Bookcliffs and just got back from pack trip this morning. I have pretty good intel on Fish creek from other buddies that have hunted in this area. We went though SHe and FIsh drainages. None have hunted Little creek, east willow or west willow. so just wondering if anyone has been in the areas and had good success.....
So if anyone out there has been back in Little creek drainage would love to chat about area. Also trying to find out if "Three Springs" is in E. Willow or Little. Thanks...

I had that same tag last year, it was a fun hunt. It does take hard work with lots of highs and lows, I put 20 days in before I was able to take a nice bull. There are some guys on here that helped me out a ton as well. PM me if you want some specific information.

Personally, I would bring in a camping trailer vs the wall tent for the books if you are planning on being there for more than a week or two. Also, bring a four wheeler. The unit is huge, lots of places hold elk and lots of roads to get ride to get around to hunting areas. Brings lots of extra gas, because you will be a long ways from gas stations.

You will see lots of cow elk, smaller bulls and some real trophies to chase. Good optics are a key, it is very open country with lots of glassing opportunities. Just remember, the last two weeks of the hunt dates are the best. The opening few weeks are pre-rut and bulls can be hard to locate unless you are sitting on a water hole.

bggmhtr, Things are good down here, not a lot going on like usual. How are things up north? Is the grass really greener once you broke away from HQ? Did you or your boy draw anything this year? No one in my family got anything.
