I took this buck on the Powder River on November 3rd. We hunted on a couple of different ranches. The bucks were rutting hard in the Powder River country a hundred miles or so from Miles City. Interestingly, there was no rutting activity on a ranch north of Miles City. Don't figure. This buck ended up scoring 174. He was too pretty to pass. We saw some other good bucks including a 30" 4 pt that was cookie cutter image to a buck I took in this country last year--modest forks with OK mass and a high 150s score. As much as I love wide mule deer, I was just looking for something a little different this year. We were hunting just before the full moon so deer movement was way off. We glassed up most of the deer during the middle of the day. We saw a fraction of the deer I have seen in this country in previous years, and which had been scouted in the proceeding weeks. My buddy ended up shooting a 28" 3X3, his first mature buck. It was great trip--I'm already looking forward to next year but will pay more attention to the lunar cycle. I keep hoping I come across a whitetail that tempts me away from those big mulies! Although I've seen some good whities, I just haven't seen one worthy yet!
