Okay, first of all I know how some of you people get when questions are asked about an area to hunt. Yes this would be my first hunt in this area, and no it is not the "first time" up there, I just haven't been there in quite some time. With that said is there anyone out there willing to give a little information on where to start looking for elk in this country? With the gas prices and all it would be helpful to start off in the right direction, I live about five hours away and plan on start scouting at the begining of August. Some general inforamtion on which road(s) to start on or what area to start in on. Does anyone have any pictures to post of any elk they may have taken in this unit? Would I be able to fill my wolf tag up there?

I have never seen a wolf up there, but I have seen more bears in the past few years. Deer numbers are down, not sure how the elk population is doing as I have only hunted them seriously for a few years. Elk are where they are. I have had shots at bulls a few hundred yards from the road, and also places where there are no roads. It is big country up there. Scouting will tell you what is happening, especially if you are hitting it in August. I believe it takes a few years of hitting it hard to figure out where the animals are.
As for wolves, never seen or heard one up there. Talked to the owners of the Sawmill gas station in Clayton (stop by for a burger) and they said there was a den of wolves across the river. A big wolf came in and they disappeared.

Thank you for taking the time to reply... I will definitely stop by for a burger.
