LAST EDITED ON Feb-22-12 AT 02:14PM (MST)[p]so i think i've narrowed down my choices for LE elk in utah, im gonna do a premium hunt it just depends on weather i want the panguitch or the dutton? what do you guys think? the odds of drawing either tag with my points are the same, witch unit would be the best for a 350 bull or better? looking forward to the feed back!

I would say Dutton... theres always nice bulls comin off that mountain. It also depends on what area you know better?

i know the units about the same, some parts better than others and they are close to home thats another reason i narrowed it down to these two units

Only know the dutton. Planning on being out there this year for the late hunt and possibly the early. If you been there then you know how rough it is. And with a premium tag in hand a 350 bull is possible on that unit.

I'd have to agree with Sniper.. Dutton is a great unit, a ton of area, and some really nice elk as well(you gotta work for them).. I hunted this 2 years ago with a family member he ended up taking a 340 bull on the 2nd day of the early rifle, we saw some nice ones though.

i know that its all about the chase and being out in the hills with friends and family which i am looking forward to as well, but call me greedy, ive waited a long time for a tag i want a bull thats gonna turn heads, and im not afraid to get into the deepest nastiest canyon out there to pull a big bull out, i know dutton has got some good bulls, and i know panguitch does too, i think panguitch is a sleeper unit you really dont here alot about it, but every now and then they pull a big nasty bull off there, i reckon that could happen anywhere tho,

justhunt, I know how you feel, I had been there, done that. I had waited years for my chance to get a big bull and by god, I was going to hunt my ass off to get that 350+ bull or bust. Had the same exact bench mark as you!!

One piece of advice, you dwell on that freaking score thing and it will RUIN YOUR HUNT!!!! I had spent every waking moment dreaming of my 2010 Dutton hunt the moment I knew I had that tag. I had vested myself and had tunnel visioned on that 350+ bull for months, spent every last dollar and minute I had over it. Almost got a divorce over it. I got down there 5 days before my muzzy hunt started and had myself worn out before it even began trying to find that bastage in the sweltering heat we had that fall.

Then circumstances did not go as I had expected and help I had planned on had other commitments, other people got involved in our camp that had no ties to my hunt and were yelling at me because I was getting back so late and had to run my truck to charge my trailer batteries because my generator died so I cook diner and take a shower for gods sake.

Dude, by day 6 of the hunt I was mentaly and physicaly exhausted from my persuit of that 350+ bull. When The evening of day 6 came, it was on the edge of a front coming in and had cooled things off. The elk lit up and I had my chance. I seen my bull and as I settled my crosshairs on him at last light, the thought entered my mind, he is not a 350 bull. It was then I realized looking at him that all the damn score thing is is a number. My bull wound up being right at 340. My bull had changed my life litteraly. I look at him now hanging on my wall and he reminds me every day of one thing. That is the fact that just like life, you can not take it too seriously or you will miss out on the whole experience of what it is all about. Go down there, hunt your ass off and find a bull that YOU WOULD BE HAPPY WITH regardless of score.

If you go down there and shoot a 320 bull, walk away with your head held high taking pride knowing that you did everything you could and that is all that matters. Not the numbers.

Take every minute in and enjoy it because how soon will you get this chance again?

ageed Utahbigbull! and about the post earlier I must have worded it wrong, cause there is absolutely nothing wrong with a 340 bull, i was just relating that the dutton holds plenty of nice bulls..
I believe if you get that tunnel vision on your hunt about score and if it'll be a disappointment to take less than a 350 bull your not hunting for the right reasons. It's all about the experience. One of my favorite hunts was killin a cow elk after a hell of a hunt with my bow. Getting a 350+ bull is just a cherry on top if it happens! Good luck to you justhunt, wherever you pick it will be your area, and your bull will be waiting for you :)

We should all frame Utahbigbulls post and hang it on our walls. I hope when I get the chance to chase a bull in Utah, I have learned that lesson. I am going to try my best to never put a tape on him.

+1, nice post, just reading that open my eyes a bit, thanks

+1 utahbigbull

2 years ago I drew my Utah LE bow bull tag (favorite unit and 2nd go-round in it with an LE tag) and I drew my Az. bow bull tag again too (2nd drawn tag in Az.).

A daydream fall hunting Utah LE and Az. bow bulls.

I turned down so many bulls and filmed them instead that by the time both hunts ended-----you got it----I had great footage but no freaking tag filled because I was so stuck on 350 or better NET P&Y.

Not only no tag filled but I was wore out physically and emotionally.

My bud 'WARBRIUM' had one of those drop dead I drew unit # Az. bow tags and he did the same as I did----heldout--filmed = ate the tag.

Do not even get all screwy in your mind for a 'score' bull.

Don't be fooled by that big spill utahbigbull just gave you all about how hard he hunted. I was with him on that hunt for 4 or so days so i know how it really was.....:)

Really all B.S aside he hunted his arse off and killed an awesome bull. And every thing he said is spot on. Too many people get caught up in a score that they miss what its really all about.

This past year me and a great buddy drew wasatch archery tags. We hunted 20+ days in some of the prettiest country around. We hunted hard up every morning and to bed late at night. We both had multiple chances and some very very close calls. On the drive home neither of us had a bull in our trucks and both tags went un punched. It was hard to swallow that neither of us killed a bull and we put in so many long hours chasin em. But in the end I would do it again in a heart knowing I was not going to fill my tag because I have never had an experience like that one in my life. I dont care how big the bull is when he is less that 10 yards screamin in your face now thats something else.

You know its funny since I been out of the marines in 08 I have helped and took part in killing 11 or 12 bulls in Utah and when the time comes to get myself one I cant.. Ha ha

well i just got finshed with my app for utah 2012 LE hunts, i chose dutton premium elk, it has the best odds for drawing the tag with the points i have, (besides fishlake, and northern units) gads i hope i draw this tag this year,

I would go with Dutton since you know both areas. I dont like all the private ground on Panguitch.

Some great advice on this thread. A trophy is what you make of it, not what some "Club" scores it.

But I'll bet Pleasedeer and Sniper would do it all over again. Doesn't matter if you eat your tag after hunting and passing really nice bulls, or take something that doesn't score "350." We hunt elk, especially in the rut, because we love it.

+2 Califelkslayer I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Justhunt let us know if you draw that tag. The premium tag would be a great tag to have down there.

trust me next to my dad and my good hunting partners, this site will be one of the first sites to know if i do draw, the application period hasn't even closed yet and i already cant wait to find out, this is gonna be the longest 3 months of my life,........ well if i draw then waiting for the opener will be the longest 3 months

Good choice JH BTW did I tell you about the bull my brother and I saw on Panugitch last year just before the deer hunt? I guessed him to be 365 my brother (who is much better at scoring) said he was pushing 380. I really hope you draw and we can all follow your success. My brother applied for the Panguitch Premium. He is a couple years out from drawing.

i would really like to a chance hunt both panguitch and dutton, i actually had to flip a coin on which unit to put in for, and then put the other unit as 2nd choice (like that really matters) and you never know your brother might draw there was a guy that drew dutton premium last year with zero points (lucky)
