Colorado Unit 21

Well it took 8 points but I finally drew a Colorado unit 21 2nd rifle, October 19th start date. I live I Moab, UT so I am only a few hours a way at most and plan on looking over a lot of the area in the months to follow. Is anybody familiar with this unit that would consider giving me a few places to start my scouting? Also, realistically speaking what types of buck's can I plan on seeing for the most part? Thanks, Tbuck..

I drew this for archery last year and again this year. You should see plenty of bucks in the 140-165 range. We were there for 3 days last year and I saw one buck I would place around 190 and a few 170 type bucks. I don't know how the rifle hunts are but in Aug-sept many of the deer are in the highest elevations. I had a friend draw 3rd season 2 years ago and he passed a 180 buck and ended up with a dink. I don't think it is an area where you can pass many bucks over 170. There are definetly 200" deer around but not many. I shot a buck that went 149" with my bow and I really hope to out-do that this year. I guess we will see. Good luck to you.

I also drew for archery in 21 and i sure hope its a good hunt. There is 3 of us in are party and we are non res and have never stepped foot in that unit before but have heard good things about it. I want to know how u can draw it 2 years in a row. Maybe u bought a landowner tag or something. Even as a resident i dont think its possible to draw 2 years in a row for archery. I know Co does not round up points so u could not of draw with a party that had more points than u. MtQuivers maybe there was some big drop off in apps for there this year but hard to to think that is the case when this hunt just keeps getting harder to draw.

Aaron,

Couldn't he have drawn this tag last year using the point saver system and then use what points he had left for this year?
Just a thought.

That could just be it. I did not even think about that because its never been a option for all years except last year. I just wished i would have had the points to do the same thing.lol

Well, I lived in Unit 21 for most of my life and have hunted it since I was a boy. You are in for a real fun hunt. The unit gets better later in the year when the migration moves in making the November season prime. 13 non-resident points didn't get me the tag this year unfortunately. Study your map well cause the land owners show no mercy to trespassers and there is a boat load of private in the best areas.

Thanks for the replies guys. buck-fever do you recommend hunting the Utah / Colorado boarder or East of the main highway in this unit? Cedars and Sagebrush or the Aspens? Thanks in advance, Tbuck.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-05-07 AT 06:10PM (MST)[p]Aaron last year I had four points and drew it with two. They gave me two back and I drew again this year with two points. It is a very fun hunt and when they say the late season is better I can't even imagine that. I saw over 40 bucks a day on each of the three days I was there. And believe it or not I saw more bucks than does. Lots of bachelor groups between 2 and 10 bucks. The only problem with this unit is the lower elevation (highest peaks are 8500-9000) and TO MANY ROADS. Access is just too easy in MOST areas. But I obviously liked it enough to put in again.

GOOD LUCK ON YOURE HUNT . THIS IS ONE OF THE PRIEMER DEER UNITS IN COLORADO. I HAVE SEEN MANY GOOD BUCKS IN THIS UNIT. NOT MANY OVER 190 BUT A LOT PUSHING IT. I LIKE THE AREA AROUND EAST DOUGLAS CREEK IT SEEMS TO HOLD PLENTY OF FINE BUCKS.
