Been 21 years since I hunted archery in that unit. I hunted from Deep canyon to the Mesa/Montrose county line. Camped out there in 2010 and saw a good 7x7 in deep canyon and a good 6x6 on the south side of the tongue as well as many smaller 5x6s,5x5s and so on. Elk are here today and gone tomorrow. If you see a good bull in the evening, by the next morning he might be in the juniper/pinyon,two canyons over,or unit 62 by morning. Last time I drew the tag, we arrived on Labor Day about 5:00PM, threw our gear in the cabin and headed for Deep Canyon. From the rim we could see 75 to 100 elk spread everywhere with 5 to 6 bulls bugling. I couldn't talk anybody into going down there that late ( I should have gone by myself),so we came back next morning-nothing-saw no elk, heard no bugling. Biggest piece of advice I can give is "strike while the irons hot". Never hunted the rifle season ,but the rancher we stayed with also guided rifle hunters and told us the saddle out towards the end of the tongue was a good spot during the gun seasons. Good luck with your hunts.
