My wife drew this tag last year w/ 7pts.
We had a blast scouting & riding wheelers all over getting to know the unit better. We found many big bulls in their summer hidey holes. Many pushing over the 350" mark. But everyone we talked to said the Bulls won't be in the same area come September. the rut changes everything along w/ every archery hunter using hoochie mamas for 4 weeks, then the LE rifle hunters. Needless to say when the muzzy hunt started the elk were scattered & in the deep dark timber or many miles from the roads, which I like anyways.
Her goal was to get a bull bigger than my 320" archery Unitas bull.
We hunted hard for 6 days straight b4 sunup to after sundown. On day 6 after shooting & missing twice in the week, I was able to call a bull into 98yds. W/ 1 shot she put the smack down on a nice 338" 6pt. About 2 miles from truck & 1000ft elevation gain.
So in conclusion, we were into elk everyday. Bulls would sound off but wouldnt cooperate. Very call shy when close to them. Use calls to locate, then sneak into them. Find water / wallows.
We called rag horns in every day.
The elk are pressured for 4 weeks by every hoochie mama blowing archery deer, cow elk hunter, & the LE hunters. Then the LE rifle hunters. B4 muzzy hunters get to the field.
I'm willing to give you some locations of areas were we hunted & wallows we found if interested!
It's a huge unit, don't get caught thinking you need to go to different spots everyday. Find a area & get to know it.
Good luck!!!
