What would you do?

What would you do...
A guy shoots at a deer with his bow, everything is legal.Doesnt follow up on his shot immediatly...goes back the next day, finds blood, tracks the blood, finds the deer. The deers meat has been picked clean either mt lion/coyotes...Brings the head home with pictures..hes friends with a CO. CO says keep the deer head, and continue hunting....

I would tag the deer, and be done minus the meat..I am having a hard time with this guy being able to harvest two bucks...

Just a scenario to ponder????

RE: What would you do?

that is sick and wrong and extremly illegal call dwr get something done about that

RE: What would you do?

1- i'm preety sure you can't pick up a skull in utah.

2- i know you have to tag you deer BEFORE you remove it from the kill site.

with that, this sinario just doesn't seem to be likely without a poaching charge involved.

my 2 cents.....

RE: What would you do?

We had this happen a few years back in ore., buddy got a weak hit on a muley as we were packin a elk out.He hit him back a ways i saw the hit, we let him lay the nite, back next morn at daylite, double trouble, a bear had found him then the coyotes. He put his tag on the horns, took some pics of the carcess, cut off the horns. The only way in my book to do it.

RE: What would you do?

The Deer didn't die from natural causes, it died from the guy's arrow. He owns it, or what's left of it!!!!!!

RE: What would you do?

the only way he should be able to keep hunting is if he spends several days hunting for the dead deer and can't find even the carcass.

Even then, I would not hunt again knowing that the deer I hit was dead somewhere.

RE: What would you do?

It has happened to us before. Dad killed a deer just before twilight - he ran w/o kidneys for nearly a mile and it got too dark to continue tracking. Heard the yotes on him that night. Found him the next morning. We could only recover from about the neck up, not even a decent cape. Still he tagged it and the hunt was over.

Get the badge number of the "CO" he talked to. Something isn't right.

RE: What would you do?

"what would i do?"

if i was the hunter; this case is more than "hit one and your done," it's more like "killed one so i'm done".

If the guy's friend who know's of this situation; Tell your friend that the CO doesn't know what he's talking about and even if he did, because of the one harvest already, he morally should "hang it up", as far as that tag is concerned.

RE: What would you do?

Just got back from an Az strip hunt, 13a. I had the same thing happen to me. Shot the deer in the evening and recovered him th next day. The yotes had devoured the majority of him and the rest was spoiled. I tagged the deer and took the antlers. Hunt over.

RE: What would you do?

i would blame myself for the animal being eaten take pictures grab the head and call it a hunt there is no way i would try to harvest another animal

RE: What would you do?

Thanks for the responses, I have an email into the division about this situation, well see what they say...The issue I see is that one of their conservation officers has made the call to let him hunt, Ill keep you posted..I am disappointed in this. I feel like this is part of hunting...The hunter could have very easily used flash lights, and atleast made an attempt to retrieve the animal..He should ethically "like most have said" Tag It...your done....

RE: What would you do?

I would say he would have to tag the buck... If he shoots it and finds it while still in the hunting season he should have to tag it...

RE: What would you do?

There may be more t this than simple printed law. The original post indicates the shooter and the CO are friends. is there any chance the CO "turned his head" for a friend? I'm fairly certain it was an illegal, if not unethical move either way...and a CO would know it. Someones gonna lose a friend, their job, or both.............

It sounds to me like everyone thinks he should tag it and be done hunting, I AGREE!! Also it sounds like this happens way more than I would ever imagine...do you guys take flashlights (plural!!) when you go hunting?? I understand and encourage letting a buck expire, depending on the situation letting it lay for a few hours, but if you hit one before dark then by 1 or 2am at the latest you should be on that blood trail going after the meat period!! When we shoot, kill, or wound an animal...I don't care how cold it is out there, how far from your truck/camp we are, or how dark it is!! We have an obligation to find and take care of that animal!! Waiting til morning is about as unethical as it gets in my mind...wasting game!!

Just my 2 f-n cents!!!!

RE: What would you do?

He shouldve tagged it and been done hunting. The way I see it is "poacher mentality". "Take the head and keep hunting". That's just not right!

RE: What would you do?

That sound alot like highgrading to me. He is done no matter what as soon as he picked up the head it was his to tag.

RE: What would you do?

In Bc if you are in possesion of a recently kicked animal (or parts) you must have a cancelled tag to back it up. Once the animal is down, the hunt is over!

If we're not supposed to eat animals, why are they made of meat?

RE: What would you do?

Im going to go out on a limb here and say BS that either this happened, or that if it did happen, and CO said he could keep the horns and not tag the buck, and keep hunting. Doesn't even matter what state, which by the way wasn't mentioned.

If it did happen as "reported," there is a CO that needs to be looking for a new job - END OF STORY!
