The last deer comity meeting will be held tonight at the Springville fish hatchery or dwr office @ 6:00 pm
You won't be able to voice any concerns you have but you can look the guys that are supposed to be represent you in the eye on what they are presenting this year. There is some scary stuff that will be said, so if I were you I would be there.

There are no big deer in Utah we need to shut this state down and restrict tags so nobody can hunt for 5 years. There is so much deer hunting pressure down south you can't even get away from the roads and find a spot without seeing another hunter. Written with extreme amounts of sarcasm!

Actually that isn't even funny here is the truth

I have seen more 160-170? typical?s running around on the roads while hunting elk than ever. Our group even spoted one trash buck that made anything we have scouted on the Vernon or the Book Cliffs this year look small.

The Beaver Unit even has larger bucks than we have seen on our elk hunt. Including a 220? monster non typical. All of which are on public ground.

Good luck to you hunters this year. It could truly be one of the best hunts you have ever had and it could get better next year. The deer herds are growing in Utah faster than they are in Colorado. The sky is not falling. We don't need to do anything drastic

What ideas are being floated and seem to have the most support? Last I heard the state seemed to be leaning toward very conservative changes.

That said...I have to agree with you assesment of the deer herds. Things are looking up in much of Central and Northeast Utah as well.

I hope the "comity" can find some common ground some where between doing nothing and the SFW rough draft. The bow guys have killed lots of big nice deer, but we can do better. Maybe a draw on bow tags?;-)

When will the commitee have some kind of plan written up?

The deer comity wasn?t as bad as I thought it would be. I had herd a lot of rumors that simply weren't true.
I really respect the hard work all the members are doing. I won't go into detail on what was said because I think there are some good things that could come from it.

I do hope that the deer committee will come up with a concrtete way to deal with problem areas--- a little micro-management. I don't think that any sweeping changes are warranted but I do believe that the inability or lack of concern for areas that are struggling is a problem that needs to be addressed. There are areas in the state that the DWR must have a mandate to take action to fix. If a management unit is below 15 bucks/100 does they should be mandated to restrict hunting for 1-2 seasons, if the ratio is below 12/100 it should be closed for a minimum of 1 year or until the count shows 15-17 bucks/100 does. If an area is closed for more than two years it would have to be set up as a draw area. I don't think that would be in the best interest of hunters. I don't believe we need more LE areas. But, we do need more focused management of smaller areas that are not meeting DWR objectives and have not for years. I believe only micro-management will help those areas. The big picture may be good, but there definitley are parts of the BIG picture that are not good. The Cache area and the Central Mt. area are prime examples. The Nebo average for 3 years is 11 bucks/100 does, the Manti is only 10.9/100. I don't see at this time any effort by the DWR to remedy the problem. It seems as if the big game manager takes a more of a wait and see attitude. Hopefully, the deer committee will put some real teeth into their recommendations.
