I was fortunate enough to spend over two weeks on a limited entry utah elk hunt and harvest a bull. The delema I am faced with now, is that my kids (10,6 and 3) were very sad that they were not a part of that, it was the first hunt they have never went along with me either in camp or the field. I live in Hooper but have never hunted deer in the Northern area, focusing on Central and Southeastern where I grew up. Well, this year I drew my third choice (Northern) and have no clue where to go. I have no expectations of harvesting a buck due to the fact I will not pull the trigger unless he is a wall hanger. Getting my kids out and just seeing some deer is more important to me now. I am hoping to get my kids out within driving distance and just put thier hunting clothes on and see what we see and let them enjoy the memories of being out on Gods front porch. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can take my kids in the truck or fourwheeler to just see does, mabey some small bucks to get them excited (but let them go)? I was thinking of cruzing around Avon, Monte or farmington canyon. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

the three places you mentioned are just as good as any when it comes to hunting northern, public land and just out for the drive and experience and no scouting done. Take your pic and just hope that your young ones like the color orange:)

LOL! "Like the color orange" That is funny! I think any of those are good options as well. Monte might be best - remember that Farmington gets hammered and has limited area to just drive around and be able to see anything.

What you mean gods front porch. Thats the dutton son not up here north. ha ha ha. Northern tag your gonna see a ton of hunters but so will the rest of us as they cut the dates so everybody has to cram it in such little time. If it were me i would head up to monte. Hit curtis creek road and hop on the wheeler and you can follow that road for miles and miles. Drop down towards randolph old and new canyon. Alot of hunters but lots of trails to have fun on. Or start from randolph and go up. Bear lake area on the east side. Get a map there is some public over there that is just some flats and sage brush hills. There is usually some deer runnin around up there.

sniper1, anywhere out there is gods front porch man. I think you are smok'n someth'n though buddy. I would have to say after getting off of the rock pile, it would be more like the devil's living room. You seen how that mountain is a shooting stick eat'n hell hole :) The best part was seeing that mountain in the rear view mirror my friend (JK). I was kinda think'n of the area you are talking about. I know there is a dirt road and some trails in the lower end on the north east side of the main road where I was thinking of cruzing the sage and cedars. I just don't know how many people I will be driving the Dodge over in 4wd compound low. Never been on that mountain during the rifle hunt. I guess it dosen't matter though. Just get the kids out, dress them up and let them think we are going to find one. I know that it is a mad house on the Manti on the rifle, thats why I got into the muzzy so up here, I have to expect LOTS of people.

Oh ya lots of people. All of us have to expect it i think. The randolph area aint bad lots of people but you can usually see deer from the four wheelers once back in on some trails. 3 pairs of shooting sticks in a week. Good hell that un heard of. Hopin this weather starts going soon for the hunt in november. Im looking forward to the dutton.

"looking forward to the Dutton"? What is that nonsense? I told you once and will tell you again, there are no elk on that mountain. It would be worth it though if Gimp could be tagged and I can see that bull you told me I missed out on while diving down the canyon, chasing bugling bulls. I have no expectation for the deer other than hopes of someone busting them out and being one of those lucky damn road hunters that had one come running right into the tailgate of the pickup. If I can get the kids out and see some deer no matter what they are or antlers or not, all the better. Mabey pound one of those little ones everyone else gets excited over so the kids can get thier hands on him and then donate the meat. If not, oh well. I will not be bringing shooting sticks by any means!!

no elk on the mountain ha ha... come down id november with us. i will show you elk. Good luck this weekend though let me know how it goes

monte and randolph your going to see lots of orange for sure cause there is no deer hard winter kill one of the 3 day units this year. Better off heading more north loagn area.
