My First Buck

LAST EDITED ON Oct-23-10 AT 10:18PM (MST)[p]I got my first buck today. I wasn't going to post it because everyone else has a really big buck, but I will anyway. I am happy with my first buck and happy to put meat in the freezer, which is why we hunt in my family. Here is what my mom put on her blog about it.

Ol' Deadeye Karter got his first buck today. He is so excited. He and Uncle Grizz went to the spot where Kolby, Karter's dad, killed his first buck and the place Karter used to hunt with Pop. It proved to be the perfect spot. And somewhere Pop is smiling down on Karter and is as proud as he can be.

It should also be noted that Karter was shooting my Grandma Mary's trusty ol' .270. We have affectionately named the gun "Mary". It was bestowed to me in 1995 as a Christmas present, and Grandma Mary has never regretted her decision to hand this gun down to me as it has been used well and I treasure it dearly. It had been quite a few years since "Mary" (and Grandma Mary) killed a buck with that gun, but Karter got it sighted in this week and told me, "Mom, I could drill a quarter at 200 yards with it now." when he came back from shooting Thursday night. He was excited and ready for his first rifle deer hunt.

His day started early as he and Uncle Grizz got up at 4 am to make the long drive to hunting area. Karter tells the story like this:

"We were hiking up on top of the mountain, looking down the hillside. We were headed towards a patch of trees when we stopped to glass the hillside. We saw a few does first but then I heard Grizz shout Pop's famous words, "The last one's a buck!". I sat down and put my gun up to scope out the buck, resting my elbows on my knees to steady my rifle. It didn't take long for me to decide I was going to take this buck. I had buck fever and I had it bad. I wanted him. I told Uncle Grizz "I'm going to shoot him, Grizz. I'm going to shoot him." The buck was standing broadside to me, about 187 yards away, so I jacked a shell in, got the buck in my crosshairs, and squeezed the trigger. The next thing I know Grizz was shouting, "HE'S DOWN! HE'S DOWN!".

"At first I didn't believe him and I sat there saying, "Really? Really? Are you sure?". But sure enough, my buck was down; one shot through the lungs and he moved no more. Then the work began. I took on the task of field dressing the buck myself then Grizz and I drug him back up to the truck."

"I am very excited to have killed my first buck. I was so pumped up about it and very proud of myself for hitting the buck in the vitals with the first shot, right where I was taught. I thank my Pop for teaching me how to hunt and instilling in me a love of hunting, and my Uncle Grizz for taking me with him all the time and being my hunting buddy. I also love "Mary", my mom's .270. I like hunting with a gun that has been passed down through my family and has killed deer before."

Doesn't matter how big it is, it's great that you're out hunting and you filled your tag.

Awesome job! You never forget your first buck.

Nice job Buddy,Meat in the pot always is the top thing, The hunt you had with Grizz will one you tell for a long time.

"I have found if you go the extra mile it's Never crowded".

Congrats yougman. It's a great story and one you will remember forever and will tell your grandkids about when you pass "Mary" down to the next generation of hunters in your family. Way to go!!!!

I'm 51 years old and I still remember my first buck......think yours is bigger than mime.....mine never forked! I still have my little horns......my dad made sure I'd have them forever...Glad he did! Never judge the success of your hunt by the size of the trophy. Congrats on your first buck. Oh yeah.....few kids your age can write a great story like that......keep it up.

Way to go and congrats.....................thanks for posting and reminding us it isn't always about how big they are, there is more to hunting than size.

WOW! Great job! I killed my 2nd buck today.... and its not the size that matters.... its the experience and the people you shared it with. Congratulations!!!!!

Nice job kid. Not only the buck kill, but the story you posted. If you actually were the one that typed that out.... some people on here should be really embarrassed.

Great job! Way to get it done on your first buck! Congrats!

Hey Elliston- He did actually write the part where he is speaking of the actual hunt. He's my kid, what can I say? I'm a writer so he knows I'm very picky about his writing and that it better be good before he submits the final draft. ;-) And it was for my blog, which his grandma in Missouri reads to keep up on him and his siblings so I needed it to be perfect. Can't have the mother in law thinking I'm a slacker mom. ;-)

Plus...I told him the grammar police are always on patrol around here and to be careful. lol He's a smart kid though; reads a lot and is a 4.0 student, takes his school work seriously and subsequently things as simple as a MM post as well. That's one great kid right there, though. I'm so proud of that boy. Love him to pieces.

Wow! Got me a little glossy eyed. Best post/buck of the year IMO! Nice Job K1 and Tri-K!!

Nice job there Karter!
Always happy to see the Youth Hunters get in there & GIT-R-DONE!

Great Job!!!

You will never forget your first buck and the story of how it was hunted and killed!!

Congrats no giant 200" typical or 300" non-typical makes me smile bigger than a youngster and his first buck!

Congrats to you too Triple K you've raised him right and that doesn't just "happen".

Congratulations young man. Way to go.
Brings back memories of my first that is still vivid in my mind after 30 years.
I like your post and buck better than all the others posted so far this year.

Congrats Ol' Deadeye!!!! You should be proud! Great buck and great story. The best post I've read so far hands down! Good job buddy and thanks a bunch for posting. You will never forget it I promise. I know I haven't.

Thanks again,
Scott

Damn straight the grammar police are on patrol and you better believe I won't let even a 12 year old get away with bad grammar - even if he is my nephew! And I will attest that his mother is right - he is a great kid! Second best 12 year old on the planet!

That post pretty much sums up what its about for a lot of us. I don't know that some of those killing monster bucks get that kind of excitement. Congratulations!

Great job. NEVER let go of that rack, regardless of size. It's the experience and memories that count. Sounds like you come from a great family, I'm jealous.
