Oct 30'th myself and a freind decided to give it another go in the high country though I had been up the day before and not seen a deer, and several freinds had shot pretty nice deer in the lower elevations. I am a beleiver that you have a better chance at nice bucks in the High country. we started out before light so as to be in some good glassing area when the sun came up. As the morning wore on, we worked through some cliffs and shell rock quietly seeing alot of coyote sign and few deer sign, nothing to fresh. Just as I came upon a ridge I heard some shell rock move across the next ravine and thought maybee my buddy had jumped something so I quickly manuvered around a cliff so that I could see where the noise was coming from and there was a pretty nice buck grassing on the other side just below the sun. I called my buddy to come take a look and help decide if he was big enough because we wanted to make sure he would be worth the pack out! About 10 or 15 minutes I watched him while waiting for my freind to come down where he could take a look. when he finally could see him, he and I agreed with it being the last day I probably would not find a better deer. At this point I had to wait for a little while longer for him to step out from behind a tree, I then took another look, watched him bed down and slowly and camly placed a shot with my new 300 ultra at 250 yrds. He did not go anywhere! "well alive" he did roll down that steep SOB about 50 yards. Anyways He is nice and heavy and just a beutiful looking buck.

Great buck! Congrats on seeing it through and getting it done. What's with the packs? Put that horse in the last pick to work! lol

I wish it was that easy but there is no way that a horse could make it up there I could barely walk through it because it was so steep. The picts dont really show how steep that really was I was able to call my dad and have him bring horses up to the base of the mountain and even that was rough in some areas. so we had to pack him a couple miles around cliffs and ugly stuff. if you look at how are feet are positioned in the pack photos you will kind of get an Idea of how steep it really was.

Nothing wrong with that buck at all - even on opening day on the general hunt!

Good job! Way to stick to your guns and get it done when and where you wanted.

HOOK 'EM!

Nice buck congrats!!!!!!!!!!!
