Anyone else curious to hear and see the results from down there this weekend. Damn I wish I had a tag!!

I have a tag, but will be hunting the west desert deep creeks instead to fill my bull elk tag.

I was down there on Friday looking around. I don't have a tag. I saw a dozen or so bucks but most were two and three points. Saw a small four-point. I was just on the roads but did a lot of long distance glassing too. I saw more bucks than does so the ratio looked good but quality not so much. I'm sure there are some good ones on there though. Here is the best one I saw. He is a 3x3 with a cheater on his right g2. Hanging out right on the road so he might be dead by now. Needs a couple more years, imo.

A lot of talk on the forums- this one, Muley Madness, and Utah DWR about this unit being opened up this year. Many people feel it will be a slaughter but yet they will go on to say that there are no deer there. I've never been but from the sounds of things feel like the DWR did the right thing by opening it up. The Henrys are definitely the top tier unit in the state with the Pauns a full step under it. Next you have 3rd tier of Vernon, Book Cliffs, La Sals, etc for use of good opportunity of some very nice books with a few exceptional ones.

All in all, I'm happy with the change from 5 regions to 30 units because we at least may have a small chance of bringing our herd back.

Anyways like the original poster I would be very interested to hear what people on Thousand Lakes this past week are saying. Was the archery hunt productive? Seeing any good bucks? Crowded?

Good luck for all those on hunts!

I live at the base of the Thousand Lake and have hunted it a few times as well as help others hunt the unit. First, there are very few deer on the unit. I have scouted there three weekends this summer and have seen very few deer. I also have visited with many archery hunters over the last week, who have seen very few bucks and no decent bucks. This could have been a good unit had the DWR spent a little time and money in developing a good herd. I know a lot of people thought that this would be a great tag to have this year, but I think a lot of people will disappointed. I believe they gave out 450 tags this year and I personally don't think there are even 300 deer on the entire unit. If anyone has any other thoughts I would be happy to hear from them, but I think there are going to be a lot of disappointed hunters this year on the thousand lake mountain. I will be hunting an adjacent unit, but good luck to those of you who got a tag.

I was down there over the opening weekend and would be lucky to see 10 deer in the morning or evening. The country down on this unit looks like it has a lot of potential maybe one day the division can get their stuff together and turn it around.

I was down there again yesterday and saw very few hunters in the area I was in. Saw one two-point hanging in a camp.
