Here's another test of your judging skills. This buck is a great looking deer, so how wide do you think he is? This buck was later taken by a hunter, so we'll actually get to find out.

Id guess 26 inches

Theodore Roosevelt's guidance concerning
conservation...
"The movement for the conservation of wildlife,
and the conservation of all our natural resources,
are essentially democratic in spirit, purpose and
method."

"We do not intend that our natural resources shall
be exploited by the few against the interests of the
majority. Our aim is to preserve our natural
resources for the public as a whole, for the
average man and the average woman who make
up the body of the American people."

"It is in our power...to preserve game..and to give
reasonable opportunities for the exercise of the
skill of the hunter, whether he is or is not a man of
means."

Tough to see at that angle how far out those G3's actually go, but I'm going to say right around 27-28 inches. What a great looking buck! Just awesome all around. Congrats to the lucky hunter.

28 7/8 outside

I'm not great at this but my thoughts are young deer, ears are folded forward a bit. Not straight on but first glance 26 but second look I think he is wider then that. The back end keeps going out, final guess 29 1/2 outside. Looks to score very well I say net (that is for fish) is 189 and 5/8.

Good guesses guys. So far 2 have nailed it, and 2 are within an inch. I know, that doesn't tell ya much. On Monday, I'll see if I can get field photo or close up of it on the ground or mounted.

Well Colorado, if you weren't so narrow minded, they would be wider off your head. lol J/K buddy

Looks like 29 to me.

Some great guess, and like the hunters initial thought, many guessed low. The buck is 30 1/2 inches wide. It grosses 195 and officially nets 192 7/8 B&C. It was also the 4th largest typical entered out of Colorado in 2011.

I'm 6'-7" and 255 and the buck is field dressed in the photo so he is missing an extra 40-50 lbs and he still dwarfs me. I had Larry put this shot up to illustrate the point of how big these bucks can be in the body.

I thought this buck was 27-28 and mid 180's on the hoof. The buck in the other "how wide is he post is easily 6 inches wider than this buck and I believe larger in the body.

Of course I could be dreamin' ;)

I see, the fronts are just a bit deeper than what I could tell from the first pic. Nice, I killed a buck with a giant body a couple years ago, easly 325+ pounds, this one looks even bigger than him.

I'll take being a half inch off but remind me never to get in a scoring contest with Xtremehunter!

Helluva buck Buckspy!

I do believe I read your article on this buck...what was it? Western Hunter or something?? Nice buck for sure!

From the live pic I would never have thought he was that big. The pic on the ground does him more justice. Hell of a buck Mike!

When someone asked how wide, its usually outside spread, as in this case.

Yelum, +1, when most see a red box on the ground, there are some that need to see the color on the bottom of that box before calling it a red box. lol

Sorry guys. Think its just a cultural difference down here. When someone in Texas asks how wide it is almost always spoken of in the terms "between the main beams". I guess it just has to do with spread credit for both B&C and P&Y. Usually the only guys I ever here talk about greatest spread are the guys that hunt cape buffalo. I will try and guess the outside width next time.

Cheers.

I have a Texan buddy that explains width with inside spread as well. Took a while for us both to get on the same page.

Tristate, you are right it is a cultural difference, and I see where you are coming from, and I will exsplain it like this, back before "B&C and P&Y" were popular in the west everyone used the overall width of the antlers on a muley as a way to judge how big a buck was. So if you hear someone referencing the width of a muledeer they are most always (unless otherwise specified) speaking of the overall width of the rack.

Same as whitetail hunters say it was a "10 pointer" a muley guy would call it a 4x4 with eyeguards, or 4 point. (or 3x4, 5x7, 2x2 and so on)

Both are cultural differences.

Too late to guess 28"???

That was my initial, quick, make a decision, guess. Guess his size fooled me.

But I don't mind underestimating a little. Now give me a going away, 3 seconds to decide look and I'll probably overestimate.

The answer is, from post 37, above...... "The buck is 30 1/2 inches wide."

I was never, what you call, a really bright kid but when they gave me the answers before hand, i'd generally pass the exam. :) How about 30.5"? lol
