Looking for any information I can get on this unit. Drew a 3rd season tag I plan on being there for the entire hunt. How are the deer numbers? What is the the trophy potential like? If a guy hunts smart and hard what caliber of buck should he expect? I kinda have high expectations from the scouting I've done here in utah the deer seem to be on somewhat of an upswing, hopefully colorado is doing the same. I have done a lot of scouting from home with maps and other tools. Kinda like the looks of the areas north of vail in 36, and colorado river area's in 35. Castle peak seems interesting to. Thanks for any help. Have a good season fellas it's almost here!

I I ever hunt a late season there I would take a boat/kayak and hope for lots of snow. If it snows, and you can't access the area by road, you can cross the Colorado in a boat and have the low country all to yourself

+1 what TXHunter58 said.

The road to Burns follows the Colorado river and is great breaks country. Just need a way to get across the river.

Many years ago I hunted that area for 7 years. Killed my first mule deer in what is now that unit. We used to pay a trespass fee and rent horses from a fine old rancher there named Wes Schlegel. His boy Rod may still be outfitting off their ranch.

All of the units in that area are highly migrational and can be feast or famine depending upon snow. There are a few bucks that live there year-round but they generally know exactly where the private boundaries are located...in particular the Piney Ranches. One of the biggest challenges you will be faced with in those units is the OTC elk hunters. At times it can almost be dangerous with so many elk hunters in the field! In fact, the road heading up to Castle Peak can look like a giant military camp with so many rifle hunters. That area has some of the best muley genetics in Colo and hopefully some year the CPW will slice tags in 35 and 36 so more bucks can age! It also would be nice if some day the CPW limited elk hunters!

Invest in a gps and the micro sd card that has the public land private land boundaries. A 160-170 buck is realistic with some hard work and some white stuff on the ground.
