Hunting Africa

With the price of a guided late season elk hunt at $5000 plus in my home state of Wyoming and a price tag of $50,000 for a outfitted Desert Sheep in Mexico. Hunting Africa seems to be more and more reasonable goal. I went to a party a few months ago, where a guide from africa came to Laramie to visit some clients and recruit new ones. Everyone there said it was awesome and couldn't wait to go back. Many have hunted Alaska etc. and said never again. Everyone there was like in a sick cult. Going to Africa changed there lives for sure! I left there excited, but have had a hard time getting excited about african game. I dream of 40" mule deer and huge Bighorn Sheep. He was offering like 10 animals for under 5K mostly antelope type animals, no trophy fees, 10 Day, less airfair, a lodge where you where treated like a king all you could eat and drink, etc. At the time I figured I could go for around $7500. Anyone here considered Africa?

BEN,.... I HEAR WHAT YOUR SAYING. I HAVE TALKED TO EIGHT DIFFERENT PEOPLE ABOUT AFRICA. THEY ALL SAID THE SAME THING, JUST GO ... ITS FANTASTIC. THE FOOD, ACCOMODATIONS, SERVICE,ARE FIVE STAR HOTEL QUAILITY. THE PROFESSIONAL HUNTERS, ANIMALS, CONDITIONS ALL ARE FIRST CLASS. AND YES ITS AFFORDABLE TO BOOT. YOU ARE WELL TAKEN CARE OF, AND I THINK I WILL HAVE TO TRY IT SOON. PEOPLE SAY-- WISH I WOULD HAVE GONE SOONER, OR CANT WAIT TO GET BACK. I'M KICKIN THIS ONE AROUND TOO. YD.

If you go, you will return. Check out Tony da Costa's web site. He has some bargains that are hard to beat. All legit and worth the money. I would go back tomorrow if I had the cash! They wash your clothes daily, cook 5 star meals, and the atmosphere is unreal. But a 30" muley is hard to beat. :)

i halfway know the guy that runs zingela safaris. i'm going out there as soon as i can manage to save the 6 grand i need. talking with him and some of his clients, you can feel the excitement they have. listening to them is like being a kid listening to my dad talk about deer hunting again.

Having read many, many books on hunting in Africa, I understand the mystic of hunting the Dark Continent and the overall experience of it. I do understand that it is much more than just the hunt.

Maybe I'm just greedy but I would only want to go if I could hunt the Big 5 (less Rhino). With the exception of the Cape Buff, the rest (lion, leopard, and elephant) are all pretty high dollar. I mean way out of my range. But that's ok with me. I'm very happy to sit by the wood stove on a rainy day and re-read some of my old books on Africa and dream.

P.S. According to Chef it's the Big 6 now if you count the African Bull Turtle :)

Had a 14 day hunt set up for Zimbabwe (sp)
and Victoria Falls -- Had to bail, my daughter burned up the cash and much more in Rehab { out of control teenager)BUT we are on the way to thinking about it again! RIMROCK

If your'e thinking about it , ya better git there . If you don't go now , you may be kickin yourself in the arse later

Africa is the best buy in the hunting world. Been there twice. Planning a 3rd. Plains game package is real resonable in South Africa, Namimbia and Zimbabwe. But be aware there are associated costs, air fare, trophy fees if you are not on a package hunt, dipping, packaging and shipping of trophies, tips, gun permits, and miscelaneous costs. Also there will be a BIG taxidermy bill. That being said it is all worth it.

For a 1st timer a good way to go is thru a reliable booking agent. They have various Safari outfitters they work with and have a track reord. I have 2 friends that booked thru DeCosta, got burned bad. Tony ususally uses new Outfitters that don't a clientel base or track record, some are good and some not.

4 years ago, I made a longshot bet on the Anahiem Angels to make it to the world series, that wagger made me 14 grand & I took that money and booked hunts to Canada, Mexico, & Africa. Out of those 3 hunts I enjoyed Mexico the most, then Africa, then Canada, in Africa I got a ; kudu, gemsbuck, wildebeast, heartebeast, warthog, & a dieker. Nothing compares to Africa for amount & variety of game you can whack. you are treated like a king, which is awkward at times when 3 people are watching you, trying to anticipate anything you might want. The plane ride is 14+ hours, so if you can save frequent flyer mile to upgrade into bussiness class you will be very glad you did. We visited a taxidermist shop on the way to our ranch that had very good work so I got all my animals done there, he did mess up on my kudu however, but the work costed only a fraction of what it would have in the states, where I was S.A. there was a tick problem something fierce, which got me somewhat peranoid, since the tick fever lasts 3 days, if you are prepared you can get a shot which gives you amunitys to the fever. Africa is a must do for all hunters in my mind, most of our hunting was done like in the show doc-taury out of a raised crows nest so it was not physically challanging, at 37 years old I think I was to young to hunt that way, I may try Africa again when I'm 50+ since by then I'll have much less piss & vinager in me, if you shop you can find hunts that are not like mine, & I would recomend that if your young. The scenery & people where amazing, give it a try.

I'm so seriously getting the itch. I would absolutely love a kudu and a zebra. I'm considering buying myself and my Dad a hunting trip to Africa in the next couple of years.

Hopefully I win the Lottery and I can take all my friends here on MM as well!

I've had the itch to go to Africa for 5-6 years. I finally got around to booking a hunt and am heading to South Africa in May for a plains game hunt. I think it s a great deal for the money compared to most other hunts.

I used Tony three times, his wife doing the flights also, even took my 4 sons and wife on one trip, so that would be like 5 huntpaks, and 9 flights total. Not a flaw, not one gliche, every thing went as smooth as silk and not an ounce of disapointment.

Just got back from Reno SCI where we visited with all our Outfitter and PH friends from the Dark Continent. I went to Namibia this past July for my first trip to Africa. Spent a total of 15 days hunting, but that is twice what you really need to have a great trip. 7-10 days is more like it for most people. Looked at literally thousands of animals, and killed my share with my 375 H&H that I bought specifically for the trip. Got a top-ten Kalahari Springbok (16.5"), and 3 other top-40 animals (Blesbok-Blue Wildebeest-Cape Hartebeest). Also shot several Kudu, Warthogs, Gemsbok, Impala, and Zebra. Had a fabulous time, and really do wish I had done it earlier. My oldest son is going to the same place this coming June, and will also go to Etosha Park for a photo safari for his wife. Plains game is probably the best way for a person to start, and in RSA-Namibia-Zim there are reasonable hunts to be found. There are affordable 7-10 day Cape Buffalo hunts out there also. All depends what you want to try for. Anyone has any specific questions, I'll be glad to answer what I can, and will let you know some others sources of info.

I too have been looking into an Africa hunt. Have a couple of question or advice. First, if you decide to ship your trophies home, what does it cost for dipping, packaging and shipping? And how long does it take to get your trophies to the US? Also, when it comes to tipping the PH or others, what are the general guidelines? Thanks.

Cost, Depends on # of animals but I had 6 shipped and it cost approx $1500. As for how much time it takes, 3mos is about minumum. Most wait til the end of the season so that means you get stuff back hopefully by Dec. Best to coordinate before you go to have animals shipped to your taxidermists. The taxidermists will then take care of getting permits from USF&W/L Service so they can clear customs in the US.

I would be interested in an archery hunt there, I am just kind of spooked at the thought of going to a country with so many poverty and disease stricken populations. Am i just paranoid? you see on the news about uprisings and all in the past. I think the price is right for what you get to hunt.
Deerking will have to fill me in on how it goes.

Schmalts, you would have nothing to worry about over there. I have spent about 1 year total in Africa and have been to all the "hot spots" (ie. Zimbabwe and Botswana) in the news and never once felt scared or threatened. It is an awesome place and I am planning on returning in the next few years for another trip. Only this time as a paying client, instead of a guide.

WB,

My father and I went in June 2004 and had a great time. We're currently looking at the options of going back in 2006/7 to try for some DG and plains game.

If you are serious about going make sure you do your homework and ask a ton of questions. I spent almost six months researching the trip before we booked it. There are tons and tons of booking agents and professional hunters that will take your money, it just depends on what your looking for. Ask anyone that has been there what they thought of the trip, what they would do next time, what they regret (if there was anything).

After I booked my trip with the booking agent I got in direct contact with the PH and sent him a two page list of questions I had to prepare for our trip. If you go expecting one thing and your trip turns out to be totally opposite, you maybe disappointed.

Ask about package deals, where you pay a set price for a specific list of animals. You can always add to that list later as I did. Or you can just pick the animals you want to take and pay for those as you go. You need to know what's included in what your paying. You don't want to get to there and find out you only paid for your lodging and everything else is extra.

Now, I had a great time and it was a perfect experience for my first trip but everyone has a different idea of what Africa is to them. If you are expecting to see the images of a National Geographic film, then you have to ask for them. Africa doesn't look like that everywhere, that kind of experience only remains in a few places. I hunted on a 50k acre game farm, as they call it, and was behind a high fence. (I don't want to start that conversation again). Going into the trip I knew the fence was there, although I only saw the fence twice in eight days, I knew it was there and to me it made the trip different. The next time I go I will make sure that I hunt free ranging animals that can travel hundreds of miles without the sight of a fence, that's my choice and everybody is different.

In our package we were able to take nine different animals with 12 total. There are some there we hunted and others we just picked out of a group and shot. The ones that we hunted were the most exciting and most memorable to me. You will basically tell the PH how you want your experience to be, spot and stalk, shooting from sticks, or you can drive around looking for the game. You make the call, and make sure you ask how they hunt before you go.

Here's a list of our expenses to date;

$4500 12 animal package
$1200 Extra cost for Kudu
$2000 Airfare from Sacramento to Kimberley, RSA
$900 Tips to PH, driver, trackers, ect..
$1500 Dipping, packing, shipping costs to San Francisco
$3000 Taxidermy fees for five animals(here in the states)
$13,100 total

I would expect to pay around $10k for a standard plains game hunt, you might find some for less or a little more.

You should probably expect to spend another $800-$1000 for gear you think you need and odds and ends. The best $100 I spent on the trip was a service that met us in Johannesburg to help us obtain our firearms permits. They met us as we walked off the plane, walked us to the front of the customs line, got our rifles first, had the paperwork all filled out for the police to just verify and sign and walked us to the contacting flight while the other hunters were still in the customs line.

I found another website has a ton of information about Africa on it and that helped me a lot to prepare. I had no idea there were so many things I needed before I left. If you want the site send me a PM and I'll send it to you, don't know if linking to another site is a no no.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'd be happy to answer them.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-09-05 AT 07:30PM (MST)[p] My goal is to take a charging Dik-Dik with a blow gun and get it on video. Those critters can take out an ankle on a full grown child!! bad mothers
But really, what the heck would you use to shoot one? a .22?
