LAST EDITED ON Dec-06-05 AT 07:43PM (MST)[p]Had my wife shoot a cow elk about 80yrds with a 7mm ultra mag and the elk keeped on running. I never did find her!! My brother took a shot before she did and they didnt fall? He used a 300rum and they ran. I checked the gun to make sure the gun was still sighted in and sure enough it was. I wonder if the darn bullet was too fast because I cant explain what happen this season. I should have told them to aim for the front shoulder and not just behind the shoulder?? What do you guys think?

None!!! MY youth last year shot an elk and the same thing happen but we found the elk 100yrs or so. NO blood trail at all only where the elk was downed!

Most likely- crow/coyote food by now.

Around Thanksgiving I was watching a show produced by the guys from "Best of the West", called "Beyond Belief". They take outrageously long shots at big game in this video. Many times bringing the animal down in it's tracks including several elk. Although I don't condone shooting at long ranges, one thing I liked from the video was the shot placement. They would aim for the upper shoulder and it would generally bring the animal down immediately.

I took a cow about 5 years ago, she was around 250 yards up the ridge from me. I shot and she took off running, I assumed I missed.
Went up and found her tracks, luckily there was enough snow to track her. After about 100 yards I saw where she laid down and there was some urine in her bed, another 50-100 yards and another bed with more urine. Finally after another 200 yards or so I found her, no blood or nothing. It was weird.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-08-05 AT 07:20PM (MST)[p]We managed to go 3 for 3 on that hunt. My son and my buddies two boys each filled there tags. They were sooting 7mm-08 and 300 Win mags. Two of the boys are 14 and one is 16. Anyway, I will never do that again, my back is killing me (3 cows in 24 hours).

did they miss???? i shot my cow this year and i thought i had missed. where she was there was no blood, hair nothing! we started hunting again, then came to this main trail where my buddy said she would be if i did hit her. sure enough, we started finding blood. we would find a lot then a few drops then a lot then some urine then a lot then none and then some. we tracked her for 3 hours and about 1/2 mile and never found her. its possible your wife missed. those 7RUM knock the piss outa em thats what my dad shoots.
