Im planning on going up to 6A to scout for my Godchild this weekend. He got drawn for this unit and we need some help getting started. The bad news is that I will not be with him opening morning and I want to get him into position to get a decent chance at filling his tag. Any help would be appreciated.

Wait till closer to the hunt and I would look at any area down around horse knoll or cedar flats

I have been seeing a lot of elk. When I say a lot of elk I mean it; around 200 cows, calfs and bulls in one herd. Look in the area near Lower Lake Mary and Upper Lake Mary. Before my friend joined the army he used to walk out behind the lake and kill every time. He went three for three in that unit. If you want to see the elk just drive on Lake Mary Road at around 7:00-7:30pm and they just come out of the wood line. Hope this helps.

You should have no problem finding elk whever you go in that unit. All the areas mentioned so far are good. The areas around stoneman lake, Apache Maid Mtn, Shnebly hill road, hold very good numbers too and access is very easy. I agree, save your scouting time to the week or two before the hunt the weather is nicer and you can also do some squirrel hunting.

Congratulations and good luck to you guys.

Thank you guys!!! I will be headed up there just to get away from town. Any particular roads I need to focus on????

Start out by taking the stoneman lake road. You can take it all the way to the east side of the unit. Then head north to morman lake. Lots of areas to go to just find a road that looks good and take it. I'm very serious when I say you will not have a hard time finding elk. The elk are all over in that unit.

6a is a great unit as you can make it as easy or challenging as you want. It comes at a trade off. Mormon Lake area holds a lot of elk and hunters. The unit does seem to have elk all over it so you can typically find an area without the herd of hunters. Looks like your getting a lot of private messages on the subject so you should hopefully get a few ideas. If not, let me know and I would be happy to give an idea or 2 if you have a 4x4.

blacknight i can set you up in good place for him to fill his tag i wish my son would have drew that tag but instead he got his 2nd choice oh well i just want to see all the kids have a good hunt here is my email [email protected] and i will set you up right.

Blacknight I own a cabin off of lake mary road and leave Thursday for about 10 days of vacation and cabin project work(it is a work in progress). Like others have said there are plenty of elk in the area. If you are around during this time maybe we could hook up. I know that area pretty well. Let me know. Jim
