I am trying to help a relative of mine out this coming year for an EARLY elk rifle hunt in Utah. He has been putting in for a certain area for the past ten years or so, only to find out they didn't draw any nonresident tags up until this past year. He really wants to go this year as he is not getting any younger. He is able to climb and walk great but he is in his late 60's (his age won't distract him from going anywhere), so don't let that keep you from helping us get into an area.

He is not very computer literate, so he wanted me to find out about these area's and see what some people have to say about them so he can use his points up in the early rifle season.

Any help you can give us would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Those would be good choices with good access. If it were me I would do 373 first, or flip a coin between the other two. All 3 produce great bulls, but would tend to think your best bet for the biggest bull would be 373 with tons of access. Either way, all 3 would be great. Just my opinion.

He would have a lot better odds of drawing the 354 tag, but I personally couldn't help out on that unit any. The other two are great hunts but with 10 points his chances of drawing drop a lot.

Let me toss this in also. 354 could get nasty with some rough areas. Many areas are ok. 354 has tons of general hunts and is a popular recreation spot. I personally would not want this tag as a NR. It is a great unit, but finding top end bulls would take work or a lot of luck. Living close would be a big plus. 354 would still be better than most elk hunts out west, but 373 would be my choice. Again, my opinion and no expert on any of the units mentioned.

You say he wants to hunt right? Well 354 gives him the best chance to actually draw the tag. They kill as many 380+ bulls off the 354 unit as they kill on the other 2 combined. He will probably shoot the first 330 bull he sees and be happy with the results. Get the tag, leave the tape at home, and go have fun. You guys get the tag and then you will get the information on where to go.

I agree with packout. 60 years old 10 points go hunting. If a 350 plus bull is really important hire some help.

With him having 10 points there is a slim chance of drawing 373. Both 371 & 354 give him a much better shot of drawing a tag based on the last couple of years. All three zones have nice bulls in them.

Good luck to him.

354 is a huge unit with alot of NR tags (relatively speaking). As mentioned, your best odds exist there. Looking at the trends, 354's apps are going down steadily the past few years. He would have a legit shot at drawing that tag with 10 points. If the trends continue, he would almost be guaranteed a tag. Granted, point creep and shifting may change that, but hard to say he has a legitimate shot on the other units.

I believe 354 would be your best bet in drawing a tag. We just bought 2000 acres at the top of Soldier Summit. My brother was up there last year during the early rifle hunt. He told me that there was an outfitter on the land we just bought, and that had just killed a 380 Bull that weekend. If you do draw a tag, e@mail me back and we might be able to work something out.
