La Sal Mountains

How's the hunting in the La Sal's? I drive past them on my way to Moab, but have never checked them out. I have hunted in and around Abajo and have been very succesful. Just time to learn a new area...

I've hunted there for the last 3-4 years. A friend arrowed a 140 net velvet buck from the road a few years back. I have killed a couple little bucks on the last day, and missed a couple good ones. I had a great time last year with my first muzzy hunt. Blew a chance at a great deer, missed a good deer, hit the two point on the last day. That's pretty much the story of my entire hunting career. Here is a pic we took last year during the muzzy hunt.

I found a good "buck den" on top of a ridge at about 12000 ft. I have seen atleast a 26 incher everytime I have been on that ridge. Only problem is that its about a 2 hour walk back to the road in the dark over rockslides and through dark timber with lots of deadfalls. I'm willing, but a lot of people aren't. I don't know what I would do if I actually shot one up there. Usually just the hunt kills me.
I am too broke to go down there this year, so I guess I'll just keep dreaming until fall of 2005.
If you're interested in hearing the story of last year's muzzy hunt, maybe I'll post it. It was A LOT of fun, but ended in the usual last day two point.
