I am thinking of going to this unit in CO for elk. Is it possible to hunt this unit in public, or is private a must? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

I know that there is a bunch of really neat NF in the unit and I hear that it gets hit hard by hunters.

I've heard that on the south, in the BLM, over looking 141, that the elk flee into that area when the orange shows up.

I have a frind that hunts it (40, not the above). He gets a deer and elk license every year. His group has been hunting in there for over 10 years. They usually fill a portion of their licenses each year.

They do not hunt private land. But, they hunt hard and work even harder to get their game out.

I would double check your info stinky. Don't think there is any way even a resident could draw an elk tag in 40 every year. There are way more applicants than elk tags. Deer would be easier to draw, but still probably not every year.

And all info I have is hearsay, have not been to or hunted the unit. But I have heard that there is a fair amount of private in 40, and the elk tend to go there when the hunters invade. However, there is supposed to be some "hellhole" canyons on public that you might find some good elk in if you have the drive to go get them.

Probably your best source on access issues would be the local DOW people. I have found them really helpful if you have specific questions. Such as: "I have been checking the area on my maps, and noname gulch looks to be isolated and hard to access. Would this be a good place to scout for elk?"

Good hunting

I hunted 40 three years in a row... with a elk or deer tag each year.

It can be 'drawn'...2nd choice on the cow tags....

More BLM to the west, 12 square miles of FS ground south/center of the unit.

Some years the FS really gets pounded, some years it is rather quiet...

Toss me a PM is ya want any specific intel.

I was assuming that coyote wanted to hunt a bull and that is what I was referring to. Sounds like you have guys here that know way more about the unit than I. Good luck.

Yeh TX... I am sure he wants Bull info.

I did it this way as it was cheaper to hunt and scout on a $250.00 cow tag than go 3-4 years and draw a bow-bull tag and then not really know much about the unit.

A 3rd season rifle buck tag one year and over with my Mrs on her Seperate Season Rifle bull tag....and a 2nd choice cow tag for me on each of them...

Does anyone know of any local landowners who charge a reasonable trespass fee in unit 40? How 'bout a reputable outfitter in unit 40?

I'm sitting on 7 preference points and might go ahead and burn 'em this year....

Many thanks in advance!!!

Not alot of outfitters that run that unit. I believe there are only 3-4 that are members of the Colorado Outfitters Association and most run public property. I would do some research and see where you could use those points, but if you are looking for a good outfitter in that unit check out Chuck Davies. They run wilderness hunts in that unit and I believe there hunts run about 3500-4000.00.

Coyote, you're onto a good idea. Know a landowner in 61 that has family in 40. Claims they took a 409" bull off of the ranch in 04. I believe this guy cuz he knows big bulls as he's lived in 61 for over 60 years. For a lot less than $3,500 I think you could get on a good ranch and have a ball.

Guy @ work muzzy hunted it last year, strictly public and had a misfire on a good bull and saw 6-7 during the hunt. I don't think he's much of a hunter either.

Most of the private in Unit 40 was for many years enrolled in Ranching for wildlife. I know mountain island wanted $8700 for a 5 day bull hunt last year. I doubt $3500 would get you on a 40 acre parcel.

Last year, the ranches were not in RFW. According to the landowners, thier cow tag quota was to high, so they fropped out. They may be back in again this year, I don't know. Rick Schroeder sold his place, and it got split up, but I believe the buyers wanted back in.

The unit is primarily private land.

The harvest data is showing a steady decline....

Down to 15% last year...that includes guided--private and DIY public harvests.....
