I was planning on bringing horses on my Unit 10 Archery hunt and was wondering if they are allowed on the Rez around the Diamond A/Boquilas area. I know that a lot of that area is Rez. I spoke with the Unit 10 Game and Fish Officer and she didnt know if they were currently allowed. I guess the tribe has gone back and forth on the horse rules. She also mentioned that that Rez does not allow 4 wheelers. Does anyone know more about the restrictions in this area?

LAST EDITED ON Apr-28-08 AT 11:38AM (MST)[p]I know you can't actually hunt on the rez with just a 10 tag. Last I heard 4wheelers were banned on the boquillas. I wouldn't consider 10 rugged enough for horses. But it never hurts to have them.

It's Bush's fault!!!

I guess I should clarify that I am asking about the Diamond A and other ranches that lease the grazing rights from the Rez. I am suprised that the Game and Fish Officer didnt know what the specific regulations are for those areas. I think I want to bring the horses to get away from the roads more than anything.

The Big Boquillas ranch does not allow 4 wheelers, but does allow horses. The Boquillas is owned by the Navajo Nation, but it is not reservation (it covers the majority of unit 10). The game warden for the area is new, Tim Pender was the game warden for something like 25 years and retired last year. He is guiding hunts and still lives in Seligman. I hope this answers you question.

I also have a unit 10 archery bull tag and will be hunting on and near the Boquillas.

Good luck!

As one of the above posts mentioned the boquillas ranch is owned by the Navajo Nation. The Hualapai reservation borders 10 to the west. They have rangers that patrol the 10 fence and you will not be allowed to trespass on rez land for any reason, unless you want to pay 18K for a bull tag.

i do a lot of hunting up on the big boquillas ranch and i am pretty sure they do not allow horses or mules. i believe the reason is they dont want any forgien hay with noxious weeds. i might be wrong but i know they did not allow me to bring mine in there last year. 4 wheelers are definatly not allowed.

i googled hualapai reservation elk hunting and seems the rez has its own program like san carlos or white mountains , and if i remember right on the sign going into the big bo ranch said no atv or horses

I have tried calling the rez but they do not answer the phone. I guess I will keep trying and will let everyone know once I find out for sure. I dont really understand the "no horses" logic. Certified weed free hay can be purchased for a couple dollars more a bale if that is the issue. Thanks for the input.

I finally got ahold of the Navajo Fish and Game Department. Spoke with Jeff who said that the Big B is No 4 Wheelers and No horses. This is due to import of weeds through the hay people bring in and horse disease that has been a problem in that area.

The NO ATV'S is the best part although there are many responsible sportsman out there ,theres the few that just get me irrated me when i hear one fire up while hunting

BBGELLERMAN- like someone said before, you really dont need horses or mules up there, not quite rugged enough. and the no ATVs is great, you never have to listen to those things. best of luck on your hunt and to everyone else that drew tags.

The info on NO ATVS and NO HORSES is right on!

The ranch guys on Diamond A (the guys who are leasing the ranch from the Navajo Nation) are worried about disease transmission to ranch stock..This isn't a Navajo rule by the way....

Funny thing about the ATV rule, G&F won't enforce it, and each year when I'm up there I see the ranch folks on ATV's around the various camps. I do report other ATV usage to the ranch folks and G&F when and if I see them.

That's OK cause you got to remember this is checkerboarded lands and the Navajo Nation owns about 500,000 of the 750,000 acres of land there. It is their call, and we ought to respect it, no matter how bizarre we think it is.

Lots of areas are walk in only on the west side, and when you got a big bull down five miles from the truck in September, lots of luck packing it all out without a little spoilage! Still kinda warm up there in mid-September.

Anyway, a great place to hunt big bulls, especially in September.

Oh, best not "wander" onto the Hualapai res, if you do go through their fence--and its well marked, you're going to jail and from what I hear, the Peach Springs Correctional Facility is somewhat similar to the Fed's Guantanamo Bay facilities....

Good luck!

Mr. Martin is up to date on his unit 10 information.

No ATV's
No Horses/ Mules
No Trespassing on to the Hualapai.

Best of luck to you. Last year was the most people/ hunters I have ever seen on the boquillas ranch. During the Archery hunts and even the late elk hunts. Hike up to a good knob or vantage point and glass, glass, glass!!!!!!!!

Thanks again for the info. I have been spending time on the East side of the unit and it looks pretty good. I have some good contacts for the Boquillas so I figured I would check that out as well. It sure seems like a big unit to be crowded with only 150 tags. Although everyone I tell that I have a tag and show scouting pics to wants to come along.

Good luck on your hunt as unit 10 is a fine place to bowhunt bull elk.

You'll have no shortage of folks around though as it seems every tag has one, two, or several helpers along, all packing photo ovals of cow elk rumps and tooting the latest screamin-whinnin-pleadin-lurin-estrous-takemehomendome cow call from the pre-dawn dark until the sun goes down. Oh, you can also expect a banal tongue lashing if you happen to park your rig too close to someone else's "spot" or dare to hunt a ridge or cedar thicket that another tag holder claims as "our spot", and these spots can be generational and passed on like Packers' season tickets, or at least they'd like you to think so!
