Bear season closed yesterday and my hunting buddy ask me while we were on the mountain whether I was getting pumped for my elk hunt yet. He's an outfitter buddy of mine that I run dogs for, and he knows that I drew a San Juan Elk Ridge Elk tag this year after waiting for twenty-eight years.

I laughed and told him I'd been too busy running my hounds to even think about my elk hunt. Truth is I laid down my elk rifle, muzzleloader and bow that were used for elk hunting over ten years ago and now find myself in reach of a dream a young man had once so long ago.

One of my biologist buddies sent word that if I do my homework on that unit there is a change at killing a 370 class bull. And in fact, there were three of the local hunters here killed bulls on that unit last year that scored: 360, 389, and a non-typical that went around 420.

But what kind of goals should a person have that has waited a lifetime for a limited entry tag? Years ago it was important to me to kill a Boone and Crockett elk, but when I ran down a B&C black bear, killed and scored it the paper work was never sent in for the records book. Would that happen on an elk?

After a lot of thought, I realize none of those goals really matter in the scheme of things. I have tons of vacation time and hope to just have fun and not worry about killing the largest bull on the planet. However, if the hunting gods show favor on me this fall I'll surely except their offering.

Good luck guys and I hope each of you have a great elk and hunting season............

Ike with all the scouting you will be doing, I think you will have the hunt of a lifetime, I just hope the hunting gods throw in a bull for ya. Your're going to have fun no matter how it come's out. I think you can kill a 360-380 class bull on that unit with some time spent behind some good glass. Good Luck

I think the excitement only once felt in your younger years is proof in itself it's going to be fantastic.
You have realistic expectations and that in itself keeps you grounded. Enjoy every minute of it as I know you will.

Congrats!

I also drew an LE elk tag this year. It's not a San Juan class tag, but it should give me a good opportunity. I'm pumped, but am also trying to temper that excitement with realistic goals. I've never shot a real big bull, but I do have a 34" wide typical muley buck on the wall and have shot plenty of nice animals.

I'm not dead set on bringing home any bull - I'd just as well come home empty handed as with a bull that is just... well, ok. For now, I've set the bottom limit at around 350 and won't shoot anything but a real monster the first few days, then slowly lower my requirement as the hunt progresses. Of course, all of this might change as I scout and see what my realistic opportunities are going to be.

I must say you have a great perspective on the wonderful opportunity you have earned. Over the course of twenty-eight years you have anticipated, dreamed and hoped for this opportunity and now its here. Time has a way of tempering our thoughts and it seems you have gone from "nothing but a B&C will do" to "lets just enjoy the brief moment". It also seems you have gained an appreciation of being able to hunt elk in a special area and not just the ability to take a great animal.

Good luck and may you see the elk many of us are still dreaming and hoping to.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-10-08 AT 01:31PM (MST)[p]After 14 years I have the San Juan archery tag. I'm amazed at how that has changed my outlook for the fall. I've also guided hunts for the last 14 years on a very good CWMU so I've been in on some very good bulls. I had no idea this tag would turn me into a kid getting to go on his first real hunt.
I'm fighting with myself as well on what to hold out for. Score is very secondary as I've seen 340 bulls that were way better than 370+ bulls. But then again it will probably be the last good elk hunt of my life. I'm hoping to find a big framed bull. Tine length comes next.

Scout for me Ike! Or at least let us know how the antler growth is going.

I also drew a LE tag for the pavhant and im only 16. I am way pumped up I have been practicing with my bow every chance I get. I have been up there a few times already looking havent seen any bulls yet though just a few cows. anyway good luck to those who got tags and congrats.

I AM THE ULTIMATESHEDFREAK!!!!

usf you lucky sucker haha i wish i had the luck of some ppl. Ike im not an old fart like some of the fellers on here but here is my advice to ya look for an experience before ya look for numbers every hunter ive ever guided or been around started out with huge goals when it came to numbers but ended up taking the "bull of a lifetime" that was less than their original goal by leaps and bounds last year we had a guy who took a 400in bull the year before set his goals high took a 354 bull and is more proud of it then the 400 bull because the experience was one of a kind and the hunt was a blast so make sure ya dont sacrifice the quality of a memory in order to try and take a bull that will score ten inches higher than another one

Bury me in the hills so i can fertilize the grass and grow bigger animals for the rest of ya

Hey Ike - hasn't anybody told you that you can't use your dogs to chase a big stinky bull???? LOL

Good luck to you anyway!!

Expect to have a great time no matter what the outcome. Had a Muzzy tag last year for this unit and loved every minute of it. My best memories are of the experience. One night we were totally surrounded by elk and I heard every elk sound known to man. Then to top it off a fight broke out between two six points. We literally ran to within thirty yards of the fight and watched in awe. What a rush. I did harvest a great bull but the sights and sounds will never be forgotten. Good Luck!

RE: I SWEAR TO GOD!!!

Ike I Love your enthusiasm buddy. As a NR Texan who will
Never Draw a San Juan tag I've got to say that I'm happy
one of those coveted tags went to someone who can see it
for what it is. Don't worry about what a bull scores, if
he looks good to YOU then let the lead fly. Good Luck
and Congrats. Take Care Baker

RE: I SWEAR TO GOD!!!

I know a hound guy that drew that tag a couple of years ago and whacked a 376 bull.

And turns out he didn't even have to shoot it. He got the bull cornered in a box canyon and started telling it how he was the greatest hound guy ever and how great his dogs were and how much game he caught...

And the bull came and took his gun and shot itself so it wouldn't have to listen to him talk about how great he was anymore.

Committed suicide just to avoid one more legendary story.

So anything can happen on that hunt!! You should have fun!! Enjoy.

I heard that same story Brent only I think the elk hunt happened down on the Pahvant? It seems some dude name hounddawg (maybe a cousin) chased a large bull elk with his hounds while mounted on his trusty steed for a week but those mutts couldn't ever get that bull stopped. Word I got was one night that bull slipped into his camp while hounddawg and his hounds were asleep and drank all his beer, then passed out. Well, morning came and ol' houndawg got the drop on that bull elk and now you know the rest of the story.......

RE: I SWEAR TO GOD!!!

Well,

That isn't exactly how it happened Dennis but close. Here is the real story.

I was sitting in the coffee shop with my guide buddy and between us there was 146 years of elk hunting experience and I was telling him how my dogs blew air hard the day before on a 4 week old elk track and everybody got butt hurt because my dogs could rig elk on the dry like that.

I turned down and they locked down for three days but I pulled them off because it was only a 468 bull, new world record in the Pennsylvania Long Hunters Book. They sat on their haunches and howled in disappointment when I pulled them off that elk track.

Of course my buddy Fred wanted a picture of that bull elk or at least wanted to see one but he was too out of shape to make it up the hill to see the rolling ball of fighting fury.

But it was still a good hunt, I looked at 11 bulls in 5 days and killed the biggest. I would have posted a picture and had the gang CLICK HERE to see it but my camera lense was broken.

But no matter I'm still the greatest elk hunter on the planet, in fact gotta run back to the coffee shop this morning and let the boys know all about me again. :)

So that's the REAL story dude!! Doesn't surprise me you had heard of the Suicide bull. Word must travel. ;-)

LAST EDITED ON Jun-20-08 AT 01:50PM (MST)[p]I laughed so hard on that one cb I could have pissed on Dawg's keyboard from here had I seen it coming..........

On a serious note, I did find a little video clip of junior while mounted on his trusty steed, wearing his red hunting jacket and preparing for his elk hunt this fall....

Oh my hell CB, that just got my Monday morning started off right.

The Black Knight from the Holy Grail... classic.

Just what I needed dude!! Gracias! The scene where the rabbit is guarding the cave is great too.

I love when the other knight is walking away, and the "stump" of the black knight is sitting there on the ground shouting at him, "Come back here, I'll bite your legs off!" :)

Been wondering what that reminded me of. Thanks. ;-)
You still working for NASA? -Dawg

I got to thinking about the Black Knight and royalty and all and the answer to your problem on that elk hunt came to me Junior.

Several years ago, my family and I made a trip to England. While there, we visited France and stopped by several hunting lodges where they still have an active kennel and run stag with their hounds. It seems they have some dogs that will run down a stag and bay it long enough for a guy (maybe even a poor shot) to shoot the animal.

They had horns all over their trophy rooms that proved their hounds will run down a stag, so I was wondering if maybe you might buy a couple of those before fall and increase your odds for a successful elk hunt this fall....what do you think?
