Bear season closed yesterday and my hunting buddy ask me while we were on the mountain whether I was getting pumped for my elk hunt yet. He's an outfitter buddy of mine that I run dogs for, and he knows that I drew a San Juan Elk Ridge Elk tag this year after waiting for twenty-eight years.
I laughed and told him I'd been too busy running my hounds to even think about my elk hunt. Truth is I laid down my elk rifle, muzzleloader and bow that were used for elk hunting over ten years ago and now find myself in reach of a dream a young man had once so long ago.
One of my biologist buddies sent word that if I do my homework on that unit there is a change at killing a 370 class bull. And in fact, there were three of the local hunters here killed bulls on that unit last year that scored: 360, 389, and a non-typical that went around 420.
But what kind of goals should a person have that has waited a lifetime for a limited entry tag? Years ago it was important to me to kill a Boone and Crockett elk, but when I ran down a B&C black bear, killed and scored it the paper work was never sent in for the records book. Would that happen on an elk?
After a lot of thought, I realize none of those goals really matter in the scheme of things. I have tons of vacation time and hope to just have fun and not worry about killing the largest bull on the planet. However, if the hunting gods show favor on me this fall I'll surely except their offering.
Good luck guys and I hope each of you have a great elk and hunting season............
