I just looked on the WG&F website and noticed they have proposed to start pref pts in 2006 or 2007. Unfortunately this will come with a pretty high cost. It looks like they will charge $40 each for antelope, elk, and deer and $75 each for sheep and moose. What are your thoughts?

I think Colorado should do likewise. $3 is too cheap IMO. I've been told it cost the DOW more than $3 to send out the refund check.

Ya, but they make up for it with the shear # of nonresident tags they give out to everybody and their brothers anyways... ;)

Somewhere in the middle like $20-$25 per species sounds fair to me. Going from $7 to $75 is a huge jump. I guess it would weed out a lot of people though!

LAST EDITED ON May-11-05 AT 09:54AM (MST)[p]Holey Smokes~! They'd sure tick a lot of people off with those huge price jumps. Lots of folks have "bought in" @ $7/point....now a proposed "bait & switch" tactic...not what a lot of people signed up for. The word porked comes to mind.

Although, it will work out similar to other states where non-residents are forced to buy a license to keep their points.

I hate to shell out more money than I have to, but that might be enough of an increase to scare off those who really aren't that interested in it but are just putting in because it is easy. I hope it doesn't hurt those who really are serious but limited on funds. Anything that helps odds even a little bit might not be too bad.

It should weed out the wannabe sheep hunters. Which will really benefit the serious residents. Public meetings are scheduled thru out the state this month.

I believe the increase to $75 is only for non-residents. It didn't say if that would be charged like the proposed deer point (after the draw). I think $75 for a point is nothing but greed on the G&F; they know that most of the sheep hunters who have invested 5 or more years will stay in the program. To charge $40 for each point for deer, elk, and antelope ,on top of an application fee is obscene! A $40 charge for points for all three species would be more reasonable (Montana charges $20 total for points for sheep moose, and mtn. goat). Hopefully the other states won't follow Wyoming's lead, and charge large point fees for each species. The cost to build points in the western states would be a couple grand per year.

How long will it take Wyoming (and the other states) to figure out they can charge $5,000 for a non-resident sheep tag and still sell every license on quota?

Sorry for the long rant.

I don't mind fronting money, paper applications, reasonable processing fees ($10-20), and paying more for tags to keep the less serious hunters out. But I have a hard time swallowing the trend of state agencies to make you buy nonresident licenses to apply or pay hundreds of dollars for points. I wish that my salary was in line with cost of tags over the past 10 years. That being said I'll still probably continue to play the game, although I'm getting close the limit of what just a chance at these hunts are worth.

Last year at age 56 I realized that I was entering the last quarter of my hunting career so I retired. With these proposed increases I told my wife she will have to continue working to keep me in the "GAME" when my time comes to play in WY!

Vaquero,Kilbug,

Are you really serious? And I quote you: "that might be enough of an increase to scare off those who really aren't that interested in it" "It should weed out the wannabe sheep hunters"

ROTF...., Nevermind. Maybe it will just weed us poor people out.

The only bobcat wondering if lots of cash equates to a serious hunter!!!!!!!

Jimbo, if you weren't applying in 27 different states, this would be chump change for a guy like you. I say jack'um up futher and separate the men from the boys...

It's too bad that our wages can't just jump to match every fee increase in the world. Add up the increase in fuel prices, tag fees, bonus points, blackmail licenses, and every little habitat stamp and other money making gimmick there is, and those hunters who chose a career that produces a modest income are going to have to make a choice. Do you buy your kid those new shoes, or do you buy another bonus point to hunt the sheep you have dreamt about since you were in high school? Do you pay the minimum balance on one of your 3 maxed out credit cards, or do you buy a license so you can build bonus points?
I play the game, and I play hard ball, but I will even admit that raising a family of 5 kids, and living on taxidermist wages, combined with all the increased license fees, is just about to break me. I have built points in all kinds of states for many many years, and I am for the first time unable to apply for all the hunts/bonus points that I have been building over the years. I am not one to whine, so I will just have to sack up and make some extra money, or get out of the game. I hate to come this far though, and then lose years in the game because I'm stretched too thin to apply this year. (Thanks USO!)

I just had to get my two bits in, Thanks for listening.

Considering most people will never get a moose or sheep tag, I thought a $7 donation was fine.
I will gladly pay the $75 donation, I would just like a remote chance at ever drawing the tag.
Can't play if you don't pay though.........

Man did I screw up. Thought the proposed preference system was for residents also, thus the comment on weeding out only the serious hunters. NR, already pay their fair share with the $1800 tag fee if drawn. Even being a resident I think a $75 fee for a preference point is excessive (although I'm paying over $100 for NV, and AZ). This won't go into effect, if approved, 'til 07 so hopefully most of you NR will get drawn in 06. If you have max points you are only 4-5 years from getting a tag. Don't know what is available for this year but last year 2 possibly 3 180 plus rams were taken in WY.
