Question has anyone ever hunted these Aleutian geese before. Are they good eating? Any help on these critters would be appreciated.

I booked an hunt in Eureka in February for a day shoot and the limit is 10 geese. I heard they are great eating and I know they are an beautiful bird as well.

If you have hunted them or ate them let me know any experience you have had with them.

Thanks in advance

There's a guy over there, who claims he has a good friend that's just been arrested for beastiality, that may be of some assistance.

Don't leave your lab running loose over that way! Just saying....... Humboldt County has some free spirits, they say.

We kill a lot of them. We like to make summer saugage out of them.I think they taste better than honkers, but not as good as ducks.extremely fun to shoot.

Funny stuff DC but I have been running those northern grounds for a few decades.

You just need to know when to run and drop Marijuana as you go to throw them off track. You'll know if it worked if the smoke behind you is not from you running. LOL

Eel knows all about this but sadly he is losing a couple of steps as he gets older LOL

LOL....you guys...LOL!

Yes, I've killed a few Aleutians. I got in on the first late season when they started the SHARE program.

They're grass eaters like Honkers. I just breast them, slice the meat thin and fry, but I'm a tough old bird too...

The late season can be real good, but it can also be frustrating. Those birds have a mind of their own and they're grouping up usually, so sometimes they're pretty flighty. You need a perfect set up. The local guides have it figured out and that is by far your best chance. You'll get some shooting and probably limit.

It took me awhile, but I found a couple photos from last February. There was a lot of water last winter.

They look to be about the size of an lesser Canadian honker but prettier feathers

Have you tried smoking them Eel, a buddy of mine has an recipe for an marinade to put on them 24 hours before smoking and then smoke them for 22 hours. then slice thin and serve with crackers and beer.
I had some honker last year and it was great this way, ever try that?

I've seen a lot of different recipes for goose jerky and such, but no, I've never tried any of them. Now I'm curious though.

I hope you have a great hunt!

This is one of the best honker recipes I have ever tried. Kind of a process but the results are always good.

Apple Cider Brine

1 Gallon of apple cider, not apple juice
2 cups kosher salt
2 table spoons of Morton's Tender quick
some whole pepper corns, some whole allspice berries.
Garlic powder, to taste
Onion powder, to taste

Boil together until mixed and then pour into a container with on 7lb bag of ice, I use a food grade 5 gallon bucket.

Trim all fat, silver skin and blood shot meat off of goose breasts.

Put goose breasts in a container, again a food grade 5 gallon bucket works for me, and cover with brine, The breasts have to be covered. I leave this in my beer fridge in the garage and stir daily for 5 to 6 days. Once out of the brine, rinse meat and let sit in clean, cold water for an hour and then air dry for 30 minutes. Brush with apple cider and sprinkle fresh cracked pepper on top.

Bring your smoker to 200 degrees and place meat on the racks until the internal temp of the meat reaches 155 to 160 deg. Remove from the smoker and let sit for a while. Usually you have to sample them. Slice thin and serve with pepper jack cheese and crackers.

Any New Post attracts us so I seek anyone here on MM'eys (Reading and afraid to write, Kuz typing is hard and U don't want to be Judged) to start Jumping forward and Posting. It never matters how many Post's you have vs others. I sure hope the silent Majority begins to make NEW Posts, asking new or old questions. Homer and I sure will help, so shall many hidden others....I Hope.

Relax and share yourself. be a grouch or Happy Guy/Gal.... Just Post.

I didn't respond to Homer's post because he can be soooooOOOoo much of a ##### at times. Just Homer being Homer.

If you have thin skin this is not your forum, maybe the other one everyone talks about on here.

Most of the guys on here are just hunters who want to talk to other hunters. Others like to critique what they say, I say good for them, if it makes them feel better so be it.

This is something my wife would do and I'll do the same thing I do to her. Ignore it and walk the other way.

That is why I am still married after 42 years.

Geez Homer never thought of getting killed by a goose. LOL I guess it could happen.

I'll let you know how it went when I get back. Hopefully I won't have a broken neck.
