25 Colorado NR points and feel I am still short

I been hoping that I would hunt unit 2 but just don't know if I can catch up. Will never get 201 and possibly unit 10 but not sure of 10, I can get unit 61 but the reports make me nervous for a NS who would only scout 5 days prior to hunt. I am 60 so do have a few years that I can get after them(assuming my health stays good). I am a rifle hunter.

Anyway do any of you see it differently. Would you just wait for unit 2 and is unit 10 equal to unit 2.

I can't answer your unit choice questions.
But I can tell you with 100% certainty that
your abilities to hunt at 61 is not a given.
Go while you can.

Honestly cant go wrong with 2,10 or 201. My personal preference is 2 but 10 produces equal quality just more private and national monument to deal with.

With only 5 days to scout I wouldn't put in for any of those units as a nonresident. You spent 35% of a lifetime accumulating those points and only can put 5 days of scouting in? Hire the best guide you can! If you feel you can't catch 2, 201 or 10 definitely do unit 61. You will probably end up shooting the same size bull there as unit 2 and need less scouting.

The rifle hunts are requiring north of 25 points. 10 could be had with 25 last year, but only 4 of 18 who applied with 25 drew. Course it depends who applies with what points in a given year.

61 is a pretty good unit. I doubt you would get a bigger bull off 2,10 or 201 simple because those units are supposed to be better. If you are nervous about killing a big bull, then hire a guide. My dad went guided in 61 two years ago and killed a beautiful bull on day 2 of the hunt.

From the little research and boot leather I have in those areas, 10 may not be in the same class as 2 or 201. I would put 10 in the same class as 61. Heck, you could even do a private guided hunt on 40 and get the same results. Just my opinion.

With a name like mdndeer, no wonder you are confused about elk hunting!

Sir, I have spent plenty of time in unit 61 over the past couple of years - if a 320" - 340" bull would make you happy the unit has plenty of them. I have seen a bull or two better, but rarely! I can definitely put you in contact with a great outfitter in that unit, who knows it well and could provide a good hunt.

I've also hunted 10 and 201 both. Without question the potential was a bit better. I shot a 363" bull in 10 (pictured here too). Again, I can give you a good outfitter in these areas.

If I had access to the right area, my 1st choice would be unit 40 - but its a lot of private land. Without good access it can be tough! I took a 364" bull (pictured here too) in unit 40 with a bow in 2017....it has some great bulls!

What is the price comparison it cost you to hunt unit 10, 40, and 201???
I'd stay the course and go for unit 2 if that's what you started accumulating PPS for 25yrs ago even if it meant never hunting in colorado. Never give up.

Those are some great bulls! So I assume u buy landowner tags for those units to be able to hunt those units regularly? Are u limited to a certain ranch or is it a unit wide tag? I've never really looked into the landowner tags in CO so I'm not as familiar.

Well, my costs have been over several years - so I am not sure its a fair assessment of today's cost?

I paid $7,500 to hunt unit 10 several years ago, and the tag we had in 201 was also $7,500 but that too was awhile back.

I paid $8,500 for a LO voucher to hunt unit 40 last fall.

Yes, that is correct - generally vouchers. Some are private land only, others are unit wide. You simply have to confirm with the landowner exactly what it is he has to offer.

Thanks for sharing that info. I think I've seen vouchers for unit 61 advertised for around $5000. So that seems competitive pricing.

Unit 2 is very good, don't know anything about 61....but Unit 10 is also very good.
I have hunted it myself along with 6 members of my family over the past 20 years, including last year.
Alot of elk to look at with alot of mature bulls.
Not many hunters as well so you don't have alot of competition.
I hunted deer in 10 last year and it seemed all we could do is look at elk during the deer hunt.
Average bull we have pulled is 345 from 10.

Good Luck!

Hunted 61 and saw lots of bulls. This was during archery and they were bugling and easier to locate. Should be bugling for your first rifle but if they are not we were in oak brush and a lot of the areas we were in was not conducive to a lot of glassing. I don't have experience in the other units but maybe it's something to get input on and think about if the other units are friendlier with the eye or putting down boot leather. I would rate 61 terrain as not to bad however there are those areas...

LAST EDITED ON Mar-25-18 AT 05:33PM (MST)[p]It took me 22 points to draw area 2 and it was worth every year of it. I was able to arrow a 367 bull on the third day. Could have waited longer because I had seen bigger bulls but I don't regreat waiting for the tag or shooting my bull early. I was 68 years old at the time. If you are younger I would wait. Thats a 367 Bull
