Manti Muzzy Elk

Looks like either me or my dad drew the muzzleloader elk tag for Manti. Haven't gotten the email yet but there is a charge on my CC, I put my dads on my CC just for this purpose as he doesn't check his card much. Anyways, I've been on the unit a few times and last year my brother and I were able to find some monster bulls from glassing some ridges from the atv trail. (insert I'm not looking for anyone's honey holes statement here) What I'm actually looking for is places that I can camp to scout. We've got a pretty decent size toy hauler so I can't go on any road I want, the only place I've been camping that's not along highway 89 is in the potters pond area. Other than that I have no clue as far as good camping areas go, especially for early in the year before all the snow has melted. Any ideas/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Congrats on the awesome tag. I grew up in that country and still hunt it every year. That mountain range is my favorite, but I am a little biased. I don't know what size of toy hauler you have but you can get about anything up Fairview Canyon as it is a good paved road. from there you can camp on either north or south skyline drive, which is the road that runs along the top of that mountain range from the North end of the unit to the South end(if you didn't already know). Good luck on a fun hunt!

Congrats and good luck to you ask well! Turns out the tag was for me by complete luck, I only had 5 points. Thought for sure it would be my dad who had 8. Looking forward to getting to know the unit this summer and chasing some elk around in the fall.

Not sure where u want to be. Ephraim canyon is passable to large trailers. 12 mile is as well.

Congrats

You can easily access almost any canyon. The main canyon roads are pretty good.

Fairview.. Paved and will have the most people.

Ephraim.. Good graded gravel road that you can take up and over to Joes Valley. You can easily drive and park on top and use ATV's from there. You can also quickly access Manti and 6 mile canyons if you are camped on top of ephraim. Easy ATV Rides to glass

Manti. First half of the road is really good. Gets a bit rougher towards the top.

6 mile.. Camp at Palisades and ride up the canyon. It's pretty rough.

12 mile same as Ephriam. You can easily go all the way up.

If you are scouting use Fairview for the north end. Ephraim for the middle and 12 mile for the south end

Everything crimedog said was true except, Six mile is now graded and graveled. Fairview is no longer the most crowded. With north skyline, south skyline, Big east, millers flat, scofield, and all the fish creek country there's more area above fairview than Ephraim. I think Ephraim takes the prize for most crowded now. Especially due to the construction they did 15 years ago widening the road, and it being in the middle of everything. They start paving it next month. It's only a matter of time before they put a toll booth at the bottom of the canyon. A simple fact is the Manti isn't managed as a premium hunt. It's managed to take the heat off other units. The DWR crams more and more people up there every year. Until someone gets killed fighting other hunters, I don't see it changing. Plan on people everywhere you go, and try to be respectful to each other.

Thanks for the pointers guys, I know not to expect a monster on this unit and will be happy with just about any 6x6. I also expect that I'll see plenty of hunters especially with the muzzleloader deer hunt being almost the same dates but do know that it won't be nearly as bad as the pumpkin patches I'm used to on the general any bull unit I normally hunt. Just hope there aren't a lot of other hunters willing to hike down into a deep canyon like I am. (At least for the first few days!) haha

They have improved 6 mile yes, But I still would not haul a big Toy Hauler up there. It's easier to either stay at the bottom and ride up, or go up 12 mile to the top.

One other canyon you might like to check out is Willow Creek canyon on the south end there is two Willow Creek canyons one above Ephraim and the one I am talking about south of Twelve mile. Access is good most years road is better graded than 12 mile. Not a lot of camping spots but you usually can find a good one. Willow Creek connects at the top with Salina Creek both has some remote canyons to hunt most of the two canyons are classified as wilderness but there is some nice ATV trails for access points. You can also go over the top and access the Muddy, Fish Creek or drive Skyline drive to the north and access 12 mile.
If you want you can pm me and maybe I can give you some more specific spots good luck and have fun.

If I am understanding correctly I think I've been up that canyon quite a bit but early in the season so I haven't been able to get up very far cause of the snow. I'm hoping to go down there this summer again. I sent you a PM, Thanks!
