I snuck out yesterday evening to get in the first stillwater flyfishing of the year. I started out fine, but within minutes my guides froze and I couldn't cast. Is there any treatment or tricks to prevent this?
I ended up busting out the spinning gear and caught a couple browns, but would've rather used the fly........ They were rising, but I don't know what they were after.

Nothing that you can really do its nature man...... I've carried a small screw driver to push the ice out of the eyelets...If your using floating line try to put a coat of line wax on...Helps a little....As for the fish rising, I'd bet their rolling just under the surface, like a merger pattern in size 20-24 that I would try...Go small and catch em big when the water is cold!

I fished the Kenai river in Alaska in November one year and had the same problem.
I recentley heard that using titanium guides will greatly reduce the freezing problem.
I wish I could get some titanium underwear!
