Ok, don't want to open up a can of worms but if you could set up a new gun, what would it be. Here's some requirements.
Hunting in CO.
.50 cal
No scope
Long range
209 primers

So post up your dream gun. Make? Model?

This is easy one. My rifle and load are the best.
It is a TC Renegade with a Stainless Green Mountain 1-28 barrel. I use Lyman peep sights and the load is a Paper Patched 500 S&W bullet.

My second choice is a Knight MK85 with peep sights and the same load.

Both of these guns are game killing machines. Ron

Any of my White Whitetails! Early or late, one with Fire Sights. Long range (out to 200) the Williams fine beads. Pyrodex P and RWS #11 withseveral all lead conicals.

bought a CVA Wolf for 56 dollars last year for this exact hunt.

209 primer
100 grains of 777
279 grain platinum powerbelts

I had a cow tag so you might to go with a bigger bullet that what I used.

Didn't see any elk but killed a small 3x4 buck at 100 yards. Both lungs and a broken leg he didn't move a step.

I shoot a t/c omega
84 grains of blackhorn 209 (by weight)
thor 300gr or hornady fbp 350's
definately a peep sight no matter what muzzleloader you decide on

I used to think all those were great until I got my Johnstons Ultimate muzzy with carbon barrel. Accurate and powerful!

There are many people who own T/C 209 primer guns that can shoot conicals well, but you can't be sure if you buy one that it will. Notice that bigbuck mentions thor and FPB bullets. They have a better chance of shooting OK out of an Omega due to the rear cup on the bullet which gives it a slight sabot like exit from the barrel. My Omega shot those two fairly well too, but if I switched to a full bore conical like no excuses, hornady great plains, or even T/C maxiballs, my groups went to pot (8 inches at 25 yards).

If you call T/C and ask them out their QLA guns like the Omega, triumph, bone collecter, etc they will tell you that they are sabot guns and won't guarantee them with conicals.

For that reason, I would recommend the T/C renegade (shot my elk in colorado this year with mine) but no other T/C guns. The renegade does not have a QLA.

Kights are a good bet for sabots or conicals. Never shot a CVA, but most people who shoot the newer CVAs say they shoot conicals well as well.

I don't know about best but the 2, I have and like are the TC Omega and the TC Encore. Both are very accurate and good guns.

I am still voting for Marley's White WITH the #11 cap. 6 X 6 ELK 275+ yards. Not even close!!!!!

You shoot conicals from these guns?

Colorado = conicals only

I guess I need to find out if the Power belts are conicals? I thought they were ok for Colorado but I have never hunted CO so I haven't checked into it. Power belts shot good out of my guns but not as good as the shock waves.

Powerbelts are considered conicals in Colorado. However, IMO there are better/tougher conicals out there and powerbelts are expensive

Full cry, I think you live near me if I remember right. I live in Colorado Springs. One time at the range with me and you will be searching the web until your fingers bleed trying to find a White Super 91. PM me if you want to go to the range and smack my steel gong at 400 yards with open sights with my White.

I've got two CVA Accuras coming this week from Buds Gun Shop. ($335) nobody else can even come close to their price. I'll be using Blackhorn 209 powder, CCI 209m primers and Thor bullets. I'll be doing the shim kit retro that prevents primer blowback and of coarse the breach plug changeout to use the Blackhorn powder.
This week I've been searching for a good peep sight so I was happy to see Marley's post about his Lyman. I want a turret style peep and found out there aren't many options out there which was a real surprise.

CVA Accura V2
110 Grains 777
300 Grain Thors
CCI Magnum shotshell Primers
= 3 6x6 Bulls 3 years in a row.

1-150 yards
1-80 yards
1-20 yards

Very accurate out to 175-200 yards which is the furthest I personally will shoot with an iron sighted muzzleloader in the field.
Does not seem to be very hard to get that close during the rut.
Best,
Jerry
