guys, i need a little help. i've got a knight bighorn that i bought new back in 2011. decided to finally get it out and shoot it. the first time out (friday) i got 6 shots and the nipple warped and had hairline cracks. could not fit a cap on it after that. thought maybe i dry fired it and caused it. went and bought two new nipples and just got back from the range. the new nipple did the same thing?? what could be causing this? thanks in advance. my trouble sighting in will be another topic!!

You are not the first to complain about this. Call Knight by phone and explain your problem. I'll bet they heard this complaint many-many times.

yes, ron. it'a 1/4x28 thread and they are knight replacement nipples.

i guess i'll give them a call if it's a common problem. hopefully i'll get a resolution from them.

What kinda load you shootin?

LAST EDITED ON Nov-29-15 AT 11:12PM (MST)[p]they were knight replacements that i got at larry's sporting goods in nampa. and the load is still being worked on but i was shooting anywhere from 90gr - 100gr of 777 under 405gr pure lead powerbelts.

well i spoke with a guy in their gunsmithing dept and he said that the bighorns were really meant to shoot 209? He said the point of the hammer may to too sharp and going in too far. said it can be taken down a bit or he could send me a few musket caps and go that route. he said the are a hotter more consistent burn than a #11? anyone, i'll give the musket route a shot.

there are of guys shooting night bighorn rifles in the WA, ID, OR areas, without problems. one guy "Sabotloader" in ID has to use percussion caps for all muzzleloader seasons and he uses #11 caps made by RWS or for practice CCI #11 magnum caps. he claims that they are just as hot as musket caps. if you decide to try musket caps I recommend you try to find the ones made by RWS as I believe they are better than the ones CCI make these days.

I really think your issue has something to do with the shape of the firing pin and or how much/hard it is hitting the nipple. When shooting my Disc Extreme with percussion caps I try to adjust the back safety screw to just allow enough firing pin travel to fire the cap with out over peening on the nipple.

Good luck on what ever you decide.

i did. they are sending the musket nipples. they mentioned the firing pin too. i guess i could try and not thread the back safety out so much. didnt think of that. but just reading that it needs to be all the way out, that's what i did. i'm very green to this muzzleloading. lol. i like it though!!

Threading it on an unknown amount will not work in the field. If you are about to take a shot on a big old buck the last thing you want to think about is how much to set the back safety.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-01-15 AT 04:54PM (MST)[p]That one isn't Idaho Legal. But he might get that Wyoming TARD to show him how to shoot 800 yards with it. :)
