Iam shooting a 30 378 it has a brake on it can I hunt With it on or should I take it off and if so what should I do to protect the threads thanks any info will be helpful

What are your concerns with the muzzle break ? If you sighted in your rifle with a muzzle break on, thats how you should hunt with it. Your zero will change.
If you are worried about muzzle blast ? You can hunt with electronic ears or muffs that shut off when the gun goes off. While hunting in most cases you wont even feel the muzzle blast. Thats not to say the same for those around you.
If the muzzle break helps you with less recoil ? It is better to hunt with it and not develop a flinch.

I use to have a 300SAUM with a vias brake on it and all the times I shot deer with it without hearing protection I didn't notice how loud it was, but thats not to say it wasn't loud. Just was more focused on shooting the deer.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-23-13 AT 05:34PM (MST)[p]Only 2 times in the last 13 years have I not had time to put in earplugs..That said I dont do a whole lot of still hunting timber. You dont want to fire the 30-378 without earplugs. you may not notice it or care while shooting at a critter but your ears will ring after, and that means you have damaged your hearing..Maybe just a little but do it enough you'll have hearing aids before too long.

If i do still hunt with that rifle i usually take off the brake, my POI is still plenty close out to 500 yards, which is plenty. If your rifle is an MK5 it should have came with a thread protector..If not call weatherby and tell them you need one.

Thanks for the info about it I will leave it on and johnt I didn't realize that it would change the zero no real concerns I was told by a few others that you target shoot with the brake on and hunt With them off just curious with it as this is the first rifleI I have owned that has one on it. Its a sako

Shoot it without before you hunt and note change in zero. Isn't likely much, if at all. I personally use to think brakes where a negative, but have enjoyed by Browning BOSS, not only because it shoots very well, but because at shots over 300 yards or so I can easily mark my shot without a buddy. Kicks like a baby also.

My gun safe isn't all that big but it's full of rifles that don't have muzzle breaks. I think i missed the boat, should have at least a few rifles that have them.

I like to know exactly where my rifles will shoot, exactly, and that's not that easy to do unless you have the perfect bench setup and are not being bothered by expecting a explosion in your face and against your body.

I guess what i'm saying is anything to help reduce recoil on his hunting rifles would be a good thing.

Sage, you should try one out, especially on a rifle that sees a lot more range time than it does hunting time. I set up my 7mm as a pure hunter and it will never have a brake, but it is a snappy little bioch off the bench.

Hunting with a brake isnt a big deal, just keep in the back of your head that you should stuff in earplugs before shooting it, i keep regular stiff plastic plugs tied on my neck, takes around two seconds to put them in.also you need to keep crap out of it, they like to collect pine needles and such while walking around. I put a "party balloon" over mine and tape it off on the barrel, i've had no issues doing this..even if i'm using a rifle without a brake I will tape off the muzzle, this does not affect POI in any way.It blows off long before the bullet even gets there.

If a guy still hunts 90% of the time i could see why he would despise brakes, i like to look over what i'm shooting most of the time, so its no big deal to me.

I'd probably never have one on a hunting rifle, but the more I shoot big stuff from the bench, the more appealing one becomes. mtmuley

Did you really need to ask such a dumb question. If you really didn't know the answer to the question, then you shouldn't even have that gun. If you knew it and are just bored and get off on people replying to you then your retarded and should not even own a gun.

....if you are hunting alone a brake is worth it and cool....if hunting with any other people it is nothing short of rude and dangerous....they are way harder on unprepared bystanders than they are the shooter....

I have a m-brake on my .338WM, it's louder with it on according to hunting partners. But I need it to tame recoil, Iuse hearing protection when I shoot. I never remove mine since I sighted the rifle in with it on and the harmonics change without the weight.

We have KDF muzzle brakes on our 300WBY Mags. They are awesome. Cuts recoil by 50%. We load our own so we shoot pumped up loads. My Dad at 80 yrs. old after shooting mine liked it so much we bought him one. The KDF muzzle Brake reduced the recoil to no more than my Dad's 30/06. Yeh the rifle was heavy in a Mark V almost 10 lbs. we set him up with a bi-pod and he was set for hunting.

It is so funny. When we are hunting we don't notice the noise when shooting at game. BUT at the shooting range. After a few shots the benches near by on both side always tend to clear out quickly :)
