I recentlymoved to Logan up here in Northern Utah and everyday I look up at these mountain and wonder what the deer hunting is like especially for archery? Does anyone have general information and personal experience from hunting this country. I would think with all the surrounding private land that the general hunting would be up high.

its tough hunting. steep, thick, rocky. there are deer but you WILL work for them. there are a few access points along the range. there is a lot of pressure in the fields during the rifle hunt. i grew up hunting it with my dad and he grew up hunting it since he lived in wellsville. ive archery hunted it a couple times with no luck, but im not much of an archer. every year there seems to be a nice buck taken off the range somewhere. good luck!

Thank you for the reply. Are the deer spread throughout the range or are they mostly down low? Since I would plan to hunt up high, I'm wondering if there's enough deer to make it worth it. Logan canyon and that side of the valley seems to be more popular. I've seen some pictures of some good bucks from that side.

LAST EDITED ON May-24-16 AT 10:31AM (MST)[p]I believe it to be the Cache unit.
I've never hunted it but that country looks very promising! Steep as an SOB but up high his where I'd be! I drive by it quite often and tell myself that I need to go browse around.
I've read a couple different things.
1- quite a few rattlesnakes up in them hills.
2- due to how narrow that mountain range is and its elevation, it's considered one of the steepest mountains in Utah.

So you'll have to work hard to get a buck up there. How's your knees?

I'd get up high on the ridge lines near the top and glass the basins below during late July and August and you'll probably find some toads! Bring a spotter

everytime i go into the wellsvilles, i always question if its worth it. its about like anywhere else, just when you think you have them figured out for the area, they change. ive seen deer from the top to downtown wellsville. i believe one of the top 5 non-typicals is from the boxelder side of the wellsvilles.

If you are a backpack hunter who likes to work for it, its a good place the enjoy the hunt.
Its an experience that is rewarding no matter the outcome.

The cache valley has several other options that are easier and hold as good, and better animals.

Plan well. During the archery hunt, when you find them, you will usually find several of them.
If you get one, you will want a guy to help pack it off.

We always hunted it with two or three guys and when one kills, its over for the weekend.
Its about all you can do to haul one buck off there plus all your gear.

If each guy hauls his gear and a portion of the meat, its easy and much better.

One guy hauling an entire deer and all his camp gear will destroy your knees coming down that sucker.

It is steeper than necessary. I have seen deer, elk, moose, and mountain goats on the Wellsville range. Personally, I had not luck hunting up there with my bow while I was at Utah State doing my bachelor's degree. Good luck. Like you said there is a lot of private property. I saw three good bucks on there in two years, but they out smarted me by a mile.
