I drew this tag this year and was wondering if anyone has any info they would like to share on the unit? I understand the unit is not loaded with elk and the trophy potential is down but I am still going to make the best of it. I'm really just looking for an opportunity to hunt elk and will be happy to fill the tag on a decent 6-point.

I have talked to a lot of hunters via huntinfool so I do have some info but would like to hear from as many people as possible to better understand the unit.

Plan to hunt Colorado and then hit this hunt on the way home.

this is garbage hunt had a friend who burn 17 points on this hunt last year his brother also drew a tag.his brother dump a 4 point the last day. these guys grew up on anthro.said it was worse than general season .the passed on some rag fives opening day never seen them again. but good luck there is always .1 or 2 big bulls that come of the early .rifle

why is Right on the Money!

Why. Gotta ask, if your friend grew up on the unit, what possessed him to burn 17 points on garbage? It's a sacrificial age class objectives opportunity unit. We got half the state crying their eyes out because they can't draw with 20+ points, yet those very same people want the whole mountain to themselves and 400 bulls in every canyon.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-16-18 AT 08:31AM (MST)[p]Pretty much the same info I have got from everyone I have talked to. I did hear from a local that said a 300 class bull is very possible. I only burned 5 points to get the tag and I was only looking for an opportunity hunt on my way home from Colorado so starting to sound like it fits the bill. I will make the best of it and see what I can scrounge up out of the unit. Has to be a decent bull there someplace. Also I have heard it's a migration unit if theres big weather so fingers crossed I guess. I appreciate the responses guys!

Migration unit? The only place for them to migrate is onto tribal ground or private ground. There's a CWMU unit they migrate onto where the chance of a decent bull is. Honestly you better hope for no snow. The chances greatly reduce if you get much snow. Good luck...Anthro used to be a great unit, but even still there's always a good bull or 2 that come off of there yearly.

Yeah, they migrate onto all the tribal land in the bottom. lol the tribal land is technically inside the unit, but you cant hunt it.

Where do you suggest I go to find a bull in that unit that's not on Indian Rez property then? I was told by most to hunt the blm land in the southeast portion of the unit.

You're Apt to Find one anywhere!

We have had a Fair amount of Weather Lately & Mountain Feed has been Poor due to Drought!

We've been seeing alot of Elk Way Low on the Reservation & Private!

That doesn't mean there Ain't a few Bulls hanging Higher!

If I could Pin-Point a Bull for you I Would,but I Can't!

Best of Luck & Hope to see a Pic or two!

Like Elk said it used to be a great unit for a 340 to 360 class bulls. Then they started killing all the cows, and then a few years ago they started killing spikes and the unit is going in the toilet just like every unit in the state. Most of bulls that stay on the unit will rut down low in the cedars and Pinions. After the rut a lot of the bulls will go back on top of Anthro and stay until the snow pushes them down. They will be hard to find like all bigger bulls after the rut.But that's we're I've seen some good bulls over the years.

>Decent hunt. Ended up taking a
>320 5x6.

Nice!

Any Pics?

Clue us in on what you seen!

Hopefully this works. First time attempting to post a picture. As for hunt details I had to cut my hunt short because my grandpa past while I was in Colorado. Left me with 2 days to get it done. Seen 5 cows opening morning and a ton of deer. Went high and that was the wrong move. Headed back to camp around 1pm and ran into a local who had seen a good bull that morning. He took my number and we met up that night close to where he had seen it and we glassed the bull with about 15 cows until dark. Made a plan to try and get him the next morning. On the way out that night we seen 2 nice 6 points but they were probably right around the 300 mark so we passed. Next morning we drove out and glasses up a herd of 70 with probably 15-20 bulls all 5&6 points but not anything impressive. We moved less than a mile and found the bull I shot with his cows and another nice bull. I ended up taking him at 180 yards. I will be honest I got a lot of negative feedback from quite a few people on this hunt and I went into it just ready to take a meat bull and go home. I'm glad I ran into that local. He made things pretty clear to me and showed me pics and such. The bull I took is no giant but a bull I would be happy with on most hunts. Wish I would have had more time to hunt as I'm pretty sure I would have got a better bull. It's a good unit if you know where to look.

Who was the Local!

Nice Job!

Jackem,

First off, my condolences on your grandfather. I'm sorry for your family?s loss.

Finally, CONGRATS! That is a really cool bull, and an absolutely fantastic bull for you to take in your time crunch. It's good to see you get it done when the feedback you were getting was all negative. Lessons to be learned there, for sure. I'm glad to hear that there are ?locals? still willing to help another hunter out like that. Good people still exist everywhere, despite what we see on the news or read on the internet.

Two thumbs up all around!

congrads on a great bull, you did well when everyone told you otherwise, usually people who want to have a spotlight on a spot they want for themselves or just repeating the garbage they hear online.

now you will get all the "who is the local" where did you hunt questions, oh ya I have xxx points and want help.

I am sorry to hear of your grandpa, never easy to lose a loved one.

How to start an argument online:
1. Express an opinion
2. Wait

Just wondering Who it was?

No I'm not looking for Info on the Unit & I Won't Burn My Points on it,Ya I Live Close By & I Know what's been going on out there for Several Years!

One More LE Unit F'D up by the DWR!

I Earned My First Few Elk Points on this Unit when it was a Perty Damn Good Place for Producing Trophy Bulls!

Would of Loved to Help Him but was already committed Helping another Hunter on another Unit!

Again jackem:Glad you got it Done!

I know this is a 4 year old post. I have a good friend that drew the nine mile anthro unit for this year-2022. It’s now a HAMS (handgun, archery, muzzleloader, shotgun) hunt that’s open sight only. The hunt is 6 weeks and the dates are October 1-November 15th. Thinking the 1st and last parts of the season will be the best as it’s a spike unit from Oct 8-20.
Has the quality of the bulls gotten any better and any suggestions on areas to hunt wound be appreciated. I’ve read the same about migration when the snow flies.
Never hunted the unit before- planning on access through Roosevelt/duchesse side -crossing through the Indian reservation.
Thanks in advance
Ballistic.

Was on the sand wash road last year, first of November, bout 30 head of cows and 3 smaller bulls down there.

If you know that road, there is a drop of a seep past the compressor station. Have seen them there a fee times over the years, just haven't been there this year. If you know the fields below the gate, keep an eye on them.

I thought this was turned into a HAMS hunt?

It is a HAMS unit. The season dates this year is October 1-November 15th. It will be a challenge to get closer with open sights (handgun-archery-muzzleloader-shotgun) but the biggest challenge will be finding areas that hold elk on the unit. Any help on some hot areas would be great.

I honestly don’t know that road - but will be looking for it on the map in the next few days. I’ve never set foot on the unit. Planning on scouting it pretty hard in September. Thanks
