Elk Back door is open

LAST EDITED ON May-23-17 AT 06:06AM (MST)[p]Refresh my memory. Is 580 an antlerless and 581 bull/either sex?

My brother and I both show 581 elk, so I hope that means we both have either sex muzzy tags as we both put cow tags as our second choices.

I'm not sure there's a method to the madness

I've got a 580 code again expecting 1st choice bull tag

I believe 580 is resident tag, 581 NR, w no indication of what choice was drawn. Good luck this fall. It snowed just uphill from CO Springs last night.

I believe you are correct.

581! Unit 40 archery, get to spend a week with my two brothers and dad at trophy class outfitters with mike Lawson! Been looking forward to this hunt for years...

Congrats Adubs! I'm hoping to draw that tag in another year and going with Mike also. I hunted with them a couple of years ago. They are a good group of guys. How many points did you guys have?

3 out of 4 elk tags drawn in our house this year... Just which choice as all are a 580 codes. Either way I look forward to spending the season with my wife and sons as we also mixed in 2 - 2nd season deer tags. Antelope next week! 7 come 11!!!

Working up to be a pretty nice fall which includes a week fishing at Devils Lake.

Had 11 going in, wanted to go last year but by the time I called in 2015 he was already booked so we booked for 2017 and still bought a point even though it probably wasn't needed.

Live4MtnHunts are you Res or Non-res ? How many points did you have ?

Nothing for me I put in with 21 Non-res points for the same hunt but didn't really expect to draw. Next year I'll probably burn my points on the 61 Archery hunt.

Nothing showing for elk for me. Does anyone know if all the elk results are viewable through the back door at once or do they trickle in some at a time?? I think I should have had enough points to draw this year.?

I have never known for Colorado back door results to trickle in. When they post that's it.

Yep on numbers.

I have a friend that drew an antlerless elk and his code is 588

62 first rifle, this will be my third time with a rifle and I have yet to even shoulder my gun. Maybe third times the charm.

Oilcan....I'm a resident. I had 19 points which is what it took last year to draw this tag. A year ago I wouldn't have thought about this hunt as I was chasing a unit 2 archery tag. I had a 50% chance of drawing an awesome AZ archery tag this year and came up short. Feeling sorry for myself, I decided to draw a great CO tag instead. I can still archery hunt if I choose so nothing really lost. I helped a friend in 61 on a muzzy tag last year. We had an absolute blast so I figured why not go play there myself. And the best part....I'm all but guaranteed that AZ archery tag next year!

L4MH I think a lot of people will get tired of chasing the NW corner units and choose other hunts.
Hope you have a great hunt

LAST EDITED ON May-23-17 AT 01:55PM (MST)[p]L4MH - looking at the numbers on Toprut, it says a resident could draw it last year with 15 pts. (Muzzy). CPW site shows 16 was needed and below 15 would be Hybrid.
So with 19, you should easily get it unless they reduce tags significantly. Am I missing something?

I drew the Early Rifle tag...not the muzzy tag. You are correct on last year's muzzy info. My buddy drew with 15. If I remember correctly he and one other person out of 10 residents with 15 drew (don't hold me to those stats).

Early Rifle last year required 19 I believe.

LAST EDITED ON May-23-17 AT 05:11PM (MST)[p]Do they put all the 500 numbers up at once? Guess what I am asking is, if you have only a 400 number at this point on the backdoor method, then you did not draw? I have a 500 number, but my nephew does not.

Mine has both: 2017 - 481 NON RES ELK and beside that: 2017 - 581 NON RES ELK

The 481 was not replaced with the 581. The 581 was added to the line. I suppose that the 581 indicates that I have drawn?

Am I correct?

>61 Early Rifle....Oct 1-7.

I drew the 61 early rifle as well. We will probably cross paths at some point. PM me as we progress and we can compare notes. I live in the unit so we will have a lot of time up there.

Yes

Thank You for the answer. That means that at age 74, I will be hunting Unit 49 second season. This also means that since I will never chase PP's again, this will be my last Elk Hunt.

Plenty of places to hunt without pp's. As long as I can swing a leg over I'm gonna keep goin!

Magic, there are a number of units where you can draw a first rifle elk tag with 0 points. Limited numbers of elk hunters and no deer hunting. Pretty good deal

Thanks guys. I have been hunting Elk/Deer/Antelope in Wyoming and Colorado since 1973. I hunted "0" PP units between draws, and hunted/killed in 61 in 2012.

My decision to let this be my last year to actually hunt is based on my left knee. (motorcycle) I plan to accompany/"guide" my Son next year wherever he decides to draw. We have hunted together since 1986. Yup, we have many years of hunting together in Colorado/Wyoming, all of which have been shoestring hunts which included backpacking/spike camps.
