LAST EDITED ON Apr-09-15 AT 09:28PM (MST)[p]My last two archery hunts where in 4A. Didn't tag out on either. 2009 I had the hunt you have and 2011 was the late archery.
The late archery was the most frustrating hunt I've been on. But that's irrelevent!
Now for your hunt. Most hunters will be concentrated in the southern part of the unit. The 300 road is a good reference. The further north up the unit, the fewer hunters you will encounter. But there's a trade off. The elk thin out. Although during September, there are elk all over that unit.
If you feel adventurous, you can hunt the pinyon/juniper country around and north of the forest boundary. The O'haco ranch allows access. Just need to sign in. Hunting the pinyon/juniper is challenging as the elk seem to just vanish in the "PJ jungle" as my buddies call it. It's easy to get turned around since it's all flat!
There are some deep drainages in this unit. If you kill a bull at the bottom of Chevelon canyon, well, bring a fork and knife and enjoy your elk there! Or bring alot of friends to help, but don't tell them where the dead bull is until you get down there. Lol. But all kidding aside, you don't want to haul an elk out of there alone. Careful there too as that drainage is the border for unit 4B.
During a good monsoon season, this unit will get hammered and there will be water all over, especially in the southern portion. Not as much rain in the central part around and north of the forest boundary, but still enough to fill the tanks. If the monsoon is weak and doesn't produce a lot of rain, some tanks will be dry. O'haco ranch has water tanks for his cattle. Plenty of tanks there to hunt.
Your best glassing areas will be to the north where you can see out into the flats and grasslands in the pinyon/junipers. Getting close will be more challenging tho.
Not specifics, but some bullet points to get you started. Wish I had that tag!
Good luck!
