Will someone explain why they would spend more than 5 grand on just an elk tag? Seems insane to me.

Probably for the same reason a 2017 dodge ram 2500 diesel is 55k.
Insane yes, but that is the market price.

The 3500 Laramie long horn 4x4 dually is 70+..... I'm a Cummins guy for sure but I'll let some smuck put about 40k miles and then only pay 50hahahahaha ...
In all reality I saw tags in A and D going from 10-15k

If you are a NR and didnt' draw and that's the price for the unit you want to hunt, you pay up or don't go. It's that or higher in 36 and the 16's.

You are right, that should not be the market. The economics of tag prices are artificially inflated because NR get stuck with paying an exhorbitant multiple price wise vs residents and then you cap us out at a very small % of the overall total available. Very limited supply - lots of demand.
