I'll be heading up there this coming monday for the muzzle loader deer hunt and I would like to know what the weather has been like up there? I see rain in the forecast for friday and saturday. I was planning on keying in on water sources if it has been kind of dry. I've been to this unit many times and I have chains, so I know what the roads can be like. Does anyone know where I can find a map to what roads will be closed this time of year. Thanks!

PM me with your e-mail, I have a geo-referenced PDF map that I can e-mail and you can load on your I-phone/pad with all the info your looking for. The issue is that it is only for the Jicarilla Ranger District portion of Unit 2. You might want to stop at the BLM Office in Farmington and see if they have the same type of map for BLM lands.

Never mind about the PM, I just learned an new trick. I e-mailed you the map, it is large so let me know that you received it, sometimes these e-mails with large attachments don't always go through. Good luck!

I've been here since Monday morning and haven't seen a single deer yet. A few tracks. Most water holes are dry, I wonder if the deer moved out to find water?

Had an archery hunt and it was dry. Water holes were dry. Seen 4 does but talked to other hunters as well they seen does/bucks but couldn't get a shot. They are in there but just got to get off the roads. Good luck!

Those early hunts are pretty tough, resident deer are hard to come by, especially if you don't have the time to find em before hand.

That being said, I think all 3 rifle hunts should be pretty good this year. With all the weather that moved through this week, the deer ought to start moving a little earlier than normal.

I always keep an eye on the Wolf Creek Ski Area webcams to see what kind of snow is up in the high country and as of this morning, it looks like they got some pretty decent snow overnight.
