Found a NM Proclamation from 1981 when there was still a Siberian ibex herd in the Canadian River Canyon. Anyone on here get to hunt them, or know anyone that did?

Thanks Vini! If you find that article, post it up if you can. Would like to see it.

Very cool!

I heard there were also some in the cliffs along Alamogordo at one point. Thought they were Siberian, but perhaps they were Persian.

It seems like the tahr keep hanging on and can't get snuffed out, odd that the Siberian's apparently disappeared. Maybe too hot for them. Or maybe they really did get killed off and Ward or someone else truly shot the last one...

Yea, and probably used a open sited rifle and shot it at 100 yards. Much to be said about the old days. No camo, no scopes, no long range shooting.
I say better hunters.

1985... I say it was probably shot with a .300 Weatherby mag with a Leopold 3x9 scope at 400 yards.

When I hunted goats back in the day I met a guy that used to work for the G&F specifically these Ibex. They are awesome looking he had a few mounted in his house. He lived in Roy, NM but told us several stories of them. At the time I though sure pal, but once I looked into to it sure enough!

I don't think they ever killed them all off and he said there was no way to get them all! Last time I was there saw some huge barbs too so you never know. Saw some whitetail too. Was a great scouting trip!

I never personally saw them but can't argue with a few of them in his house! Had several pics as well. I still want to get out there someday just never do!

Game and fish brought a bunch of different species of exotics in late 50 or early 60. Raised them in red rock and the one that handled the weather released. Think it was Lt gov. That was a big hunter?? I might be wrong.

That's where oryx came from. Where the original stock came from wild or zoos I don't know. An old game warden told me that Kudo were brought in but couldn't handle the winters

Kudu, Gemsbok, Siberian Ibex and Iranian Ibex. The only ones that really took were Gemsbok and Iranian Ibex which we know now as the Persian Ibex. All species were acquired from their native lands, quarantined 60 days there and then another 30 days when they got to the US from what I understand. They spent their entire lives at a zoo, but their offspring were sent to NMDGF Red Rock breeding facility and then released from there. Kudu couldn't take the winters and Siberian had difficulty breeding successfully.
