Well first off to anybody who has not experienced coues deer hunting all I can say is it should be on everyones list to do. Second off the Burro Mountains of unit 23 are no joke, some of the steepest, rocky, thorn infested country ive been in. I went in to this hunt with only one day of scouting under my belt. I had made the 5 hr trip down a week prior to learn a few roads and find a place to pull the 5th wheel in. I had found a tank that was covered in track so I hung a camera. I checked out somemore country and had a idea of where I would be opening morning.
Well after a long day at work friday before the opener, myself, my dad and by two oldest boys (6 and 7) headed out. We pulled in at 2am of the opener. A quick setup and we all caught a few hours of sleep.
Opening morning found us perched up in a big bowl. About 5 minutes in there he was. A big coues buck that had really good bladed eyeguards and some good mass. He was about 1200 yards out. My dad and the boys stayed behind as I made my to where I could get a closer shot on the buck. I climbed right above where the buck was. Nothing. I glassed and glassed some more. He did what coues do best, vanish into thin air.
We pulled out of there and decided to go check the camera I had hung and wouldnt you know, it was getting hit daily and there was a big forky and another good 3x3 hitting it daily between 8 and 9am with a bunch of does. We hunted all around the area and my boys hiked up some nasty country with zero complaint. All I can say is I couldnt be prouder. Day one was a success, we had seen a good buck and found more deer that I was sure we could be on in the morning.
Morning 2 found the boys and I sitting on the tank at first light.
I told them the first legal buck that comes in we would pull the trigger. I was not being picky on this hunt and just wanted to harvest a coues with my boys. Sure enough 8:30 I hear rocks move and two does, a spike and the big forky are at the tank. I pulle the rifle up as the boys looked on and told them watch the big buck. I pulled the trigger and it was over. My first coues was on the ground. The excitement in my boys' eyes was priceless. Sorry for the long writeup but im still flying high from this hunt.
