Help for my husband

My husband had posted this in General hunting and I had much hope in posting it here:
I have suddenly found myself in desparate need of a place to hunt mule/whitetail deer, pheasant, and grouse somewhere in region 7. When I applied for a license for me and my son I was assured that I had a private 5000 acre ranch to hunt on. Now, that ranch is no longer available due to unforeseen circumstances. I've never hunted in Montana and was really looking forward to spending time in the great outdoors with my son. If anyone knows of a decent place to hunt I would really appreciate the info. At this point we'll even hunt public land. I've considered Custer National Forest south of Miles City, but know absolutely nothing about the area. I've already spent a lot of money to prepare for this trip and hate to see it go to waste. I also don't like the idea of breaking the news to my son. He's been hyped since I first told him about the idea of hunting in Montana, and especially when he found out we got drawn. Thank you and God bless.
In reference to public hunting, which we are WELL familiar with, he is hoping for a guide or MUCH needed insight on where to hunt.Thank you in advance, and God bless!

Go to "Own your own adventure" Lot more Montana guys, and maybe Miller or Greeny can help you.

You already have the trip planned. You don't need a guide or private land to have a great hunt. We have BMA and tons of public ground. Load up, head out here and have a good time. mtmuley

LAST EDITED ON Sep-25-12 AT 07:58PM (MST)[p]+1. Nothing beats killing a good buck on an area that you find yourself. Like I tell everybody: Full the rig full of gas and go to some public land. Go for a hike. Most guys never leave the seat of thier truck. I was out today chasin antelope and was in a desolate chunck of state land that was only 2 sections big. I saw some goats out there and the wind was good so I went for a stalk. On the way out there I jumped 9 mule deer does and fawns and with them was a 140" buck. They ruined my antelope stalk, but it just goes to show that no amount of advice makes up for hitting the ground and just hunting.

"That's a special feeling, Lloyd"

Agreed. Load up the truck and simply head out. You never know what surprises might be out there. At least your hunting and that beats not hunting in my book anytime. Good luck on whatever you decide to do.

A great resource is contacting the bio that works the area you want to hunt. Call the F&G, they can hook you up wth contact info. Good luck!

I sure wouldn't let losing access to a 5'000 acre ranch discourage me. Lots of BMA's much bigger then that. Just about all have deer.
Custer National Forest West and South of Broadus is a nice area and big. Get the National forest map and BLM maps. So many opportunities. Like the advice above "just do it" Take a walk, get over a ridge or two from the road and there will be deer.

Nearly 40% of the custer burnned this year but that shouldn't stop you. The custer is a great place to hunt if you are not to picky on what you shoot. It has great grouse hunting but is very limited on phesants. I would look into some of the BM ranches with river or creek bottom ground.

Thanks gang! Things are looking up and in our reserch we are sooo impressed with your amazing state! Heck, I'm almost ready to move there! God bless you one and all.

Be advised that a good portion of the Custer National Forest is CLOSED due to EXTREME Fire Conditions. I have been on fires all summer and a large portion of those were in SE Montana. I am from the Missouri River Breaks in NE Montana.

GOD BLESS THE USA

I am dustbunny's husband and I would like to thank everyone for sharing information on places to hunt. After much research I have contacted a landowner who participates in the block management program and have permission to hunt his land south of Richey the first week of gun season. My son and I will be meeting up with two cousins who live in Montana. I'm really looking forward to spending time with family. I haven't seen my cousins in several years, so we'll have time to catch up and enjoy each other's company. And, as a bonus we have a chance to fill some tags. Thanks again for all the help.
