Looking for a spot to camp in 54. Only driven through, never hunted it. My 11 year old daughter was lucky enough to draw this tag. Season is Oct. 5-31. We are driving up from San Diego and my dad will be driving down from Montana. Setting up wall tent and would like to make it as memorable as possible for my daughter. She is a pretty accomplished little hunter given her age. She's taken 2 coues deer in Az and an antelope in Montana. Also wondering about cell service in the area. My wife would love for her to be able to check in.

Unless you are looking for a campground with hookups there are camp spots everywhere in the unit. Just figure out where you want to hunt and look for a good spot close by. There are some campgrounds on the northern part of the unit and more cell coverage. Cell service is very limited throughout the rest of the unit but as long as you have one of the main carriers (att, verision, ect.) normally you can find a bar or two ontop of some of the high spots. Just have to do some driving and checking.

P.S. Pack her lots of warm clothes and windbreakers. The wind chill can get very low come October.

Drive south out of Hansen. There's some good campground spots on rock creek, really cool area. Should still have good cell service and it's not that far back to town if need be. Great unit for young hunters. Grew up in the area (Wendell) and hunted it a few times. Good luck and keep us posted.

I used to live and work in the middle of unit 54. You will have spotty cell service on top of most of the hills. It is a great unit, I dream of going back. I like the western edge of the unit in the sage flats and rock rims. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. Also received a nice PM from a guy. This site is a great resource. Been studying maps and trying to get a plan. Looks like it's going to be a great time in the hills with my favorite (don't tell my son) hunting partner.

Loading up and headed out on Thursday. Can't wait to get in the hills and try to find her a buck. Got some good starting points, good glass and a strong back (or 2) ready! Thanks for the advice and PM's. Wish us luck!
