Well I decided to give Idaho a try this next season because my son can hunt at 10. More than likely we will be hunting an OTC tag unless I put in for unit 73 which I have access to private property.

My main question is should I focus on a deer or elk OTC tag. I really don't care about the size of the animal just want to give him a good opportunity and a good experience. Willing to hunt hard and get off the roads. I know with the winter that the deer herds have taken a beating.

Again not looking for units just what would probably be the best opportunity. Deer or elk

Any help would be appreciated. planning on doing a scouting trip or two either way

Thanks

There are usually more deer than elk. There were a lot of 2 points last year. There will still be some this year. Not as likely though...especially in the southeast portion of the state.

In my experience seeing deer is more likely in most units than elk. Go with a deer tag and you should be able to find something. Get a unit close to where you can go easily. There are deer everywhere. Take 3 days and get off the road and you will find something.
