On YouTube he wrote me and said he had an Oak Creek Archery tag..?? I've just assumed he was keepin it on the DL until it was broadcast time...

Kinda cool when you comment on a guy's YT videos, and he personally responds to you, and watches your videos too..!!

I'm pretty sure he came close a few times but ended up with tag soup.

Is a LE deer tag good for the extended areas or is it just Gen tags?

Too bad TV guidelines prevent us from shooting animals in their bed. This shot not allowed.

But when he walked a bit further away and on the other side of the tree, the shot was allowed. And he is no worse for wear when the arrow went right under his chest. Audio will need to be edited for TV.

It was a really fun hunt, even if densities are low. The terrain where we found the best bucks was not easy. I would suggest that if you apply, you plan to hunt long and hard in some pretty tough country. Our experience was that we saw a decent buck every four days. I had never been there, but had some intel from folks who had the tag a few years back, so that was helpful.

Wish I would have had more days to allocate, but such is the way our calendar works. For the points it took (6), it was one of the better hunts I've had for mule deer, even if the end result was not what I would have hoped for. But, such is hunting, at least for me.

I don't understand the issue with shooting an animal in it's bed? Seems like a great way to make a sure shot on an animal.

I've shot my two biggest bucks out of their beds. Last year I had my daughter shoot her first buck when he was bedded down. As long as you have a clear path to the vitals, a bedded buck makes a perfect shot opportunity in my opinion. There is no rushing the shot, so you can take your time and get a good solid rest.
I understand you have to follow guidelines for the camera but I just don't see any ethical dilemma in shooting deer while they are bedded down.
Randy, I think your show is great. I hope you can continue to produce shows for years to come.

Hmmm, passing a shot because it didn't fall into the guidelines of a television show. That sounds like a business decision. A business run off of public resources. Some hunt for the love of it and some hunt for the profit. I'm ok either way just remember why you're doing it and be honest.

I know enough to know that he has done a great job of building a career off of public resource, all while claiming to carry the torch for the common man. It's kinda like a televangelist. He's done a great job of it. So did Jim Baker.

You Randy-Haters need to get a reality check. IMO, Randy is HANDS DOWN the biggest advocate for the regular joe, and spends an ENORMOUS amount of time going out of his way to help guys, just like yourselves enjoy and be more successful hunters. To see someone "Hate" on, of all guys, Newberg, is just sad.....

Get a life guys

I get the impression that you are one of these people who's day just isn't complete without an argument, so I will not indulge you beyond this post....

Go to Randy's YouTube channel and you can view literally, hours upon hours, of Randy giving very good and genuine advice to public land hunters. I have hunted out here for 30 years, and am fairly competent at it, and I continually learn from Randy's experience. He goes out of his way to mentor and teach people and seems to be a very stand up guy. There is no other person with a public forum, that does more to help others, unselfishly for the sport that we all love.

Best of luck to you this fall. Chris

So, Big Fin last year hunted 121L with a rifle and this year 151 with a bow, but he comments it took 6 points to draw the archery tag??? Would have thought the points were used up to get the 121L tag. Check out his drawing history @ HuntNev.com

And he keeps referring his Minnesota buddies to SE Montana.

Dang, I don't drop in here as often as I used to. This is some interesting stuff here. Didn't know my Utah archery deer hunt, where I screwed up and didn't fill a tag, could bring forth such humor.

Upstart, you might want to read the first post I made in this thread. The thread is about the Oak Creek unit in Utah. It took six points to draw this Utah tag. Last I checked, drawing in Utah and Nevada are independent of each other. If you find where drawing an archery deer tag in Utah can somehow impact points needed to draw an archery deer tag in Nevada, please explain to us who apply in multiple states.

I drew Unit 151 archer in Nevada this year with zero points because my points went to zero when I drew Unit 121 Late last season. It is possible to draw a tag in NV with zero points, given they have a bonus point system. It was my third choice hunt.

As for referring people to SE Montana, I go there every time I can. I will be back there this season with a disabled vet. When I have friends from the midwest wanting to hunt Montana, I suggest they go to SE Montana. Far better deer hunting than most other places in Montana. It would look rather suspicious if I sent my friends to a different place than I hunt when I have the chance.

As for Muley_73, his comments are always good humor. I am a CPA in my real life. I disinherit the Federal Treasury for a living. That is what pays my bills, not a TV show, website, etc. My wife says the TV show is "The best job I ever bought." It's my choice to operate the show in a manner that is not going to compromise my ideas for more money, so I'm not complaining in the least.

If you want to consider that a career, knock yourself out. If the public land self-guided advocacy we provide offends you, I doubt there is anything to keep you from turning the channel.

I always find it humorous that the SFW/BGF crowd cannot resist their chances to take their cracks at me, our platforms, and the message we promote. Take a number and stand in line.

To all of you, including Cody and Upstart, I hope you have your best season ever. Good luck out there.

Randy,
I didn't say I had a problem with it. If you read my first comment you'd see that. I usually stay tuned on your show if happen to be watching TV when it's on. It's usually places I like to hunt and animals I like to hunt. I find it humourus and cluckle at the sermons. My comment had nothing the do with SFW/BGF. Actually not a member of either. I always call out those that claim to be the voice of the common man, average joe. It always comes from someone standing above those individuals. Be who you're going to be but always own that. Anyone standing above preaching to the public will catch my eye and ear especially when they claim the less fortunate.

You have a great season as well, I'm sure the write offs make it a little easier to stack those tags.

I have looked at that mountain from I-15 and thought it looked great but extremely steep. Looks like a great hunt. I found Randy on YT a few years ago. I watched everything. Especially the mule deer vids. Thanks Randy, love your vids. Love that you hunt on public land. If you ever want an awesome hunt on the Wasatch in Utah let me know. We pack in on horses, need 0 points to draw, see bucks everyday, and only 30 minutes from SLC. Might make a great show......PM me if interested.

Muley, I hope I don't derail this post to much and anyone can chime in but I have a question.
- if not a well known or "celebrity " hunter to promote public lands and there importance, then who?
I could post on a bunch of forums, social media, call and send emails to everyone in my contact list and I reach about 4 dudes and my mom.
A guy like Randy can have far reaching influence on the matter through the channels he has developed.
I can write my representatives but Randy can encourage others to and likely get 1000s of letters sent.
I for one appreciate the work he and others do for public lands.

Whoa whoa whoa. You mean that sportsmen and women should try and have a voice in the political areana? I mean a real voice that holds weight? Not just the average joes sending their own emails and letters? Do you really think that is ok?

If you all don't think that the average joes aren't being claimed and planned as pawns I don't think we will win many battles in the arena where it matters.

Sorry 73, but specifically joining MM to make a negative comment and stalking BigFins draw history on huntnev.com is a little more than "just making comments".
Obviously Updick is bitter and butthurt over something.

As for you, I have no idea what you're butthurt over, you should get over it.
Or maybe you're just a bitter person in general.

I think maybe a couple of us need to climb down off their pedestals get away from the keyboard and go do some scouting to chill for awhile..... Randy has one of the best shows and is one of the best voices for our sport that we have! I would even wager to say that if his bashers here did a quarter as much as he does for our sport they would be far to busy to be here talking @#$%! Ive spoke with him through pm a few times and he has always been great to me.

Fur,
The only pedestal I see is the one you guys have already apparently filled. You guys crack me up. It's no wonder that the "average joes" are so bitter about losing ground. (no pun intended). Seriously think about the comments made. He has done more for the average joes than anyone? Hands Down? Seriously? If that's really what you guys think it's no wonder we are losing public lands and hunting opportunities. If Randy didn't have a TV show that you get to watch him chase animals around on public land how many of you would know him? Heellll I've had my battles with Tony Abbott but I can guarantee he's done more in the state is UT than Randy has even thought about doing. That's one guy on the list. I could name many many more. You guys are a perfect example of easily controlled humans. Just like a faithful folk of TV Televangelist viewers.
Ok enough from me, I better go scout so your feelings aren't hurt anymore.

M73, let me see if I can explain this for you. Most people would probably agree that the message presented by Randy is a positive one. He is an advocate for us hunters and for those just entering the sport, and the sport itself. I could go on but, in short, this is a good thing...right? Yet, in your first post, you felt the need to throw some shade on that. You insinuated that ....It's all well and good, but he may only be doing it for the money. Again....some people can find a problem with every solution - glass half empty - Debbie downer. You get the message? Having said all this, I do have one question: Randy's messages, his videos and the platform he has created to share all this.....a good thing or a bad thing? If it's a good thing, maybe you should just leave it at that......Hmmmmm?

There is a self serving agenda there. More than likely Bigfin really believes he is doing the hunting community some good with his rhetoric. Lots of good intentions with outcomes he can't foresee. Doesn't mean he is a bad person.

Jason,
Yet again you're hung up on SFW, and in reality no that is not correct. My opinion and view of Randy was set long long before any of you even knew who Randy was, way before he ever even appeared on TV. That is a fact. Jason ever since I have known you, you jump to assumptions rather than understanding facts and the big picture of things.

I commented on SFW related issues in the past because they were relevant. And even then it was due to my own personal agenda and those I trusted more than SFW. SFW was a tool to accommodate those agendas. There is way more to my background and story than SFW. But for some reason that is literally what controls some of your lives. It's kinda sad really. So again, my issue with Randy has zero to do with two big egos swinging diks at each other a few years ago. But I am not surprised that was what you chose to immediately hang your hat on.

Rigghht. Your smart azz comment about Randy was based upon the fact that you think he runs his business "off of public resources" and "hunts for the profit"? And your post had absolutely nothing to do with Randy's prior statements regarding SFW, expo permits, the commercialiazation of hunting, etc.? And your negative opinion and views of Randy were formed long before I even knew who he was? And we all make assumptions but you understand the facts? Thanks for clarifying.

I've know Randy for quite a while, and I consider him to be a friend and a true sportsman. That being aid, he certainly does not need me or anyone else to defend him. His actions speak louder than words, and as we saw on this thread, he is more than capable of addressing questions on his own. However, I still got a laugh out of your ridiculous Post #13. But it at least it was predictable!

Jason,
Again thank you for your narrow view. Still wrong though. You are making assumptions on my issue with Randy, based on the small bit of info that you have via MM. But like you said yourself at least it was predictable.

My first conversation with Randy would have happened somewhere between 8 to 10 years ago. Helll Jason maybe I am assuming and you and Randy have been pals longer than that. But that is where my start was. His and Dons grandstanding each other a few years ago may have been confirmation of somethings I had already believed but it really do not add to anything that I already had issue with.

I have told you for years now that you only have a true knowledge of recent on goings. That is great to be involved and trying to make a difference but it only paints a partial picture.

Not everything is connected to SFW, I promise its true!

Spot on.

73, why don't you explain to us easily controlled televangelist pion viewers what the "big picture " you keep referring to is? Maybe you could fill us in on your background and thoughts regarding $FW too? Sounds interesting.

Btw, I've known about Newberg and what he's about long before I ever saw him on TV too.

Not going to wade into the debate, but will say that Randy has always been a stand-up guy.

I knew him before he had a website, a TV show, etc. and I can honestly say he hasn't changed from the guy he has always been since I've known him. What you see is what you get.

Randy's message is spot on, the biggest issue facing hunting in my life-time is the PLT crap. His message of promoting public land, DIY hunting is exactly what I want to see passed down to the next generation, and the next, and on and on. Conservation of my public lands and my public wildlife is a top priority.

I can also tell you that Randy is pretty darn modest about what he's accomplished over the years in regard to hunting, public lands, conservation, and wildlife...very humble. Most people would be lucky to do 1/3 of what he has.

There have been many times that I've called Randy for advice on issues, how to proceed, how to work to solve the problems, who to talk to etc. His advice is always solid, always to the point, and of significant value. The guys been there and done that for a long time. He also is very open to allowing anyone with a legitimate concern to use his platform, free of charge, to bring the issues to the hunting public. That has been an invaluable asset on many important issues that myself and many, many other have had.

I can also say with 100% certainty, that Randy inspired me to do more for wildlife, more for conservation, more for public lands, than anyone else ever has. For that, I'll always be grateful.

Guys like Randy deserve one hell of a lot more credit than they'll ever get.

I can tell you that m73 is a good guy. If it wasn't for him, I would have had a much harder time getting my bull on the Fish Lake unit several years ago. He was a huge help and went out of his way to help a complete stranger. I hope to return the favor one day. To be honest I am not sure why he does not like Randy. I think Randy does a great job and is a great advocate of public lands and do-it-yourself Hunters. I love how Randy has 5 days to hunt just about how the average guy would. Obviously Randy's decision to not shoot at the bedded Buck was a business decision, but who cares? He's making a TV show and has to follow the guidelines. Good luck to you this year M73 and Randy. M73, you and Randy probably would have a lot in common if you just sat down face-to-face instead of talked over the internet.
