LAST EDITED ON Aug-26-13 AT 02:55PM (MST)[p]So I went to Nevada in high hopes of shooting a great buck. I received some good info here and from my friend from Elko. Driving into my area I got REALLY nervous. We saw maybe 20 goats.
Opening morning we sent out to find Mr BIG! Just at day light we spotted a herd of 10-12 goats with a SHOOTER. So we went around and set up the scope and a spotter to watch. Me and my good friend Ron snuck into range. The sage was as tall as I was in most of that area. We got into 125 yards. Found him, and waited for a clean shot. BUCK FEVER set in while I waited for the does to move. Finally, after a few minutes, the moved and I had a shot over the shoulder of Ron since the sage was too high. I pulled the trigger and looked over to see him fall at the same time, Except he RAN OFF!!! I missed at 125 yards!!! Buck fever:( He was at least 16 inches with great mass and cutters, low 80's. That was a 30 minute stalk.

Now off to #2. Founder another 15+ inch goat with 3 other decent bucks and several does. At least 1 mile away we started the sneak. Belly crawls, then walked, belly crawl, then walk. With the rolling hills and sage, we got within 100 yards. 1 buck spotted us and ran off. The others had no idea what was up. this was 1 hour and 30 minutes to get here. I found the big buck and the 2 smaller ones mixed with the does. The sage was just barely to tall for the bi-pod. I could just see the tops of the backs of them. So I waited a few minutes, but the they were all nervous. The does left and the bucks were about to bolt. So I took the shot and shot over the top AGAIN!!!! What the hell is wrong with me???

So off to #3. Found a single bedded with his head looking away. So I snuck in again to with in 250 yards on a hill top looking down to the valley bottom. I had the bipod set and ready for the kill shot. He stood and I put the cross hairs right on the white line and pulled the trigger. I shot high again!. This time I had hit some sage in front of me that I had not seen at the end of the barrel and sent the bullet flying off. He took off and stopped at 300 and looked at me. I set again and pulled the trigger. MISSED!!! Just over the top, AGAIN. He ran off to 350 yards and stopped 1 last time. SO I said F the bipods and shot free hand. Hit him perfect dead in his track. He was smaller than I wanted, but still had fun. Hes only 12 inches, but I loved the color and black face on him. I had my friends and my oldest boy with me, which made it all GOOD!!! Fisher, my boy was excited. Thats all that matters.

I learned a valuable lesson on this hunt. It cost me a goat of a life time. Practice!!!!!! I always practice with my bow all season long. I had not shot a rifle in over 1 year. MY FAULT!!!

Major lesson learned!

Well, Land-O-Robi,
I got a chuckle out of the honesty in your story. Most guys would have just called it a one-shot-kill! haha
It sounds like you had a blast regardless of size.
Congrats on taking a fine buck in NV.
Now get back on the Wasatch!

Congrats on a good buck - it is always more special with friends and family. Glad your son got to be there with you!
