First sheep hunt

I am counting the days until my first sheep hunt. On August 12 I will be living a dream I've had since I was young. I will be high atop the shale covered Mackenzie mountains in the NWT hunting with South Nahanni outfitters for dall sheep and mountain caribou. I have had this hunt booked for 2 years and it's finally about here. I'm just excited and would love to hear any stories or advice from you seasoned sheep hunters or any experiences anybody has had with South Nahanni Outfitters. I hope this fuels the sheep fever that I hear about.
Thanks for any responses

Well I would hardly call myself a seasoned sheep hunter but I can say without any doubt you are going to have a great time. I hunted the Mackenzies last year and it was one of the most enjoyable hunts I have ever been on. The animals are plentiful, the pressure is non-existent and the country is beautiful.

The best advice I can offer is to maintain a positive mental attitude. Those mountains are more of a mental battle than a physical one. Keep your mind right and maintain a positive attitude and you will surprise yourself with how easily you will cope with the physical nature of what you are about to do. Even during the crap times keep reminding yourself you are living your dream and doing something very few get to do. The crap times are what make the adventure. Keep reminding yourself you are there to have fun.

From an actual sheep hunting perspective keep in mind that you are hunting an animal that most likely is not going anywhere. It took me a little while to figure out that no other hunters where watching the animals I was and that unless I pushed them they were probably going to stay in the general area. You have lots of time to make a proper stalk. Days in fact in many cases. Its very different from most public land hunts.

Good luck to you and I hope you post up pics and stories when you return.

Good luck elkhuntin,

I went up with my oldest daughter and we got her in on one worth looking at and her hubby killed a whoppper caribou.

Enjoy your hunt!

Mulecreek, what outfitter did you hunt with last year in the Mackenzies? Did u do any add on species? Thanks for your post. I need to get in shape mentally as far as physically is sounds like. Thanks

Zeke, that looks like an amazing time with family with some great trophies taken. I got to take my son on a bighorn hunt here in SD. He drew the tag a couple years ago with only 3 points and we had the time of our life. Nothing better than hunting with family.

I hunted with Stan Stevens at MMO. I booked for sheep, moose and caribou and was lucky enough to take all three. Never saw a wolf or a wolverine. Was told by my guide that they rarely see wolverines. Saw grizzlies every day, all the time. It was definitely a highlight for me to see so much grizzly behavior.

I have heard nothing but good things about South Nahanni. Even Stan was positive about them.

I agree with mulecreek. I doubt you'll find anyone who says they don't do a great job in providing a top tier hunt. You'll have a ball.

Enjoy your adventure since one never knows when, or if, he'll ever make it back. I've been lucky.

Zeke
