I'm looking to book a dall hunt for 2019 and haven't picked an outfitter yet. Looking for any advice and/or suggestions. Thanks!

Give us some details of what your looking for, backpack or horseback type hunt? How old are you and what kind of physical shape are you in? Gma 20 has some good horseback outfit. Rampage alaska, and lazy j bar outfitters. The brooks range is the most mild sheep range and the Wrangell and the most severe terrain, unless you draw a chugach Dall tag then they are brutal tough mountains.

I was thinking a horseback/backpack hunt would be fitting for me. I'll be 52 next year. I'll take the hunt very serious and try to get in the best sheep shape that I can. I've been on several sheep hunts in the past including killing 3 of my own. My last sheep hunt was just last year.

If you can afford it you may want to look into Yukon or NWT? There will likely be less chance for company with sometimes larger/older age rams on average?

Check out Stan Stevens. Great operation and I believe 100% success rate. It's more expensive than Alaska but you can't beat the operation and success rate on pretty big sheep.

I'm guessing most of the really good outfits are already booked up for next year, unless they get a cancelation. I had an outstanding experience with Arctic Red River in the NWT, but most all the outfits up there are very good. I wish I could afford to go again!
Best of luck

Thanks guys! It looks like I'm going to Alaska with Dillinger River Outfitters. They look like a great outfit. Can?t wait to chase white sheep!

You may want to do some research on this one. Start with Tom Shankster and Alaska Trophy Hunts. This is the same outfit, different name.

Good luck. For the best quality hunt in the state, I would be looking at outfits that have concessings in the National Preserves, Brooks Range, Wrangells, or Alaska Range. These areas are highly regulated, and have far less hunting pressure than areas on State lands

I've heard that Shankster wasn't the best guy to go with but I've never really heard any details of why. From what I understand the new owner just took Shanksters outfit over. It looks to me like they killed some great dalls last year and every reference that I spoke with had nothing but great things to say about them.
Do you have any specific reasons why you wouldn't go with these new guys?

LAST EDITED ON Dec-12-18 AT 04:31AM (MST)[p]DRO has resident hunting pictures on their website of animals taken in areas not even opened for non residents and outside their Guide Use area. Red flags for sure. And anythinf Shankster is involved with should be avoided.

Not sure how one ends up booking with them when so many great outfits were recommended...

Shankster is notorious for overbooking hunters, leaving them stranded as base camp while waiting for guides, overhunting animals and telling upset hunters to pound sand. If he is still involved with this outfit I would run away fast. There are so many high quality outfitters in AK, there is no need to book with one that has earned this reputation.

If its an entirely new operation then I cant help you out with feedback. Personally, just the fact that he has spots available in 2019 this late in the year would be a big red flag for me that he is either very new, willing to over book or has issues.

If I was spending that kind of money on a guided hunt I'd pay a little more and do Yukon on NWT! You won't see a soul. There is a good chance in Alaska you'll have company or at least see planes flying around....plus the rams are potentially smaller.

I've heard rumors of pretty steep sheep losses in Alaska this year. Not sure about Brooks though?

I've been hearing this for the last three years. Probably not good. SS is right, if you're going to spend the money these days it would probably be wise to look at Canada/Yukon. If I was looking to book a hunt, that's what I would do.

I'm pretty sure Canada hunts are even more expensive than Alaska but that's where I'd go if I was wealthy or wanted a sheep hunt of a lifetime! You will be alone and hunt country that may not have had a human in it for years!
