    Broadheads for Bears

I have two rules when guiding Kodiak brown bear hunts, use the biggest gun you can handle accurately and absolutely NO mechanical broadheads.

My son got his mission call - VANCOUVER, CA!!!

Congrats Roy! Our church sends our youngsters on missions too. We generally serve humanitarian missions where you Mormon guys mainly proselytize(I think). I know how proud and nervous you must be. It's amazing how much they mature during their mission.

    Dads 2016 Alaska Brown Bear

Give your Dad a big congrats from me. That's a hell of an accomplishment. They can be some pretty tough hunts too. I see these bears on a daily basis and I still can't get use to how huge they are.

    Drew fall P.O.W. Bear tag

My son and I use to guide for bears on POW and Kuiu. On our off days we'd always rented the forest service cabin on Control Lake. Most of the other cabins on POW are fly-in or hike-in cabins.

    Sitka Blacktail Outfitters?

Why not a DIY hunt? Kodiak rentals will rent you all you need and have it down and waiting at Trident Basin for you. Fly into town, go to Macks and get your licenses, go to Safeway for food and then down to the float plane basin and fly out. What time of year are you coming up?

    Kodiak Charters

I talk to or deal with Andrew Air at least two or three times a week. (I live here) and I would highly recommend them. I don't know how the company I work for could do without them. I would also give North River Air some serious consideration. I've had either Taj or Eric fly me on several hunts...

    Tithing on Meat???

I'm pretty sure you Mormons use to pay your tithes that way all the time. I see no problem taking 10% of what you reap and helping others out. I just wouldn't bother your clergy with it. He/she is probably overloaded this time of year anyway.

    Two big spring bears

Lucky, I'm not questioning you with an evil eye, just so you know. If you do it right, those chart are more accurate than most people think. Especially the front track/nose to tail measurement. I've been in on a sh!t-ton of black/griz/Kodiak kills and I can look at your bears and say you shot...

    Two big spring bears

Sounds like an awesome hunt. Hunting bears is one of my favorite hunts. I have to commend you on taking the kids hunting. I bet your son is the #####-of-the-walk at school right now. He will always remember that hunt. Good Dad. 450lb and 500lb bears! That's huge for a black bear! I gotta ask...

An Arctic Oven is 56#s. How much are going to spend every time you fly it up and back from Alaska? It might be worth it to you, maybe not. Most over weight charges are 40 cents a pound. All the tents that have been suggested in this thread would work almost anywhere in Alaska.

    kodiak island blacktails

LAST EDITED ON Apr-10-15 AT 01:23AM (MST)[p] Look into renting or buying an Arctic Oven tent. They're very popular up here for a reason. I see quite a few North Face VE25 tent around here too. LAST EDITED ON Mar-20-15 AT 09:54AM (MST)[p]If you're going to hunt from a tent, be SURE you bring a bear fence. You can save on baggage fees by renting camp gear here from Kodiak Kamps. I've helped set up camps with guys that have rented from them. Everything was in order and in good shape...

The Sitkas here start shedding in the last week of August. Yes I have a couple friend who have killed ferel reindeer while hunting deer near Ayakulik Lake on the southeast side. They saw many deer during their hunt so hunting both is very doable. If you want to fly in and hunt deer and...

Kenai Peninsula Black Bear Spot and Stalk

About the middle of May to the third week of June. May would be the best time because the leaves haven't unfurled yet and you'll have a better chance of seeing them. But it depends on the snow too. We've had a great winter up here this year so I don't think you'll have to worry about getting in...

Kenai Peninsula Black Bear Spot and Stalk

I'd take the Slaughter ridge trail or Resurrection Pass trails near Coopers Landing. Stop into Wildman's store and ask where the trail head is. There is a ton of blackies there but do your research, things might have changed since 2011 when my wife and I were there.

    What Ya Cooking?

I had an extra octopus laying around so I lopped off one of it's tentacles, marinated it and put it and some salmon, halibut and blacktail in my smoker. Everthing turned out great but the octopus. It wasn't firm and rubbery like octopus should be. It was soft and gooey.

    Alaskan Vacation??

I live in Alaska. Maybe I can help. I'd fly to Anchorage and take the train up into Danali Park. It's a beautiful ride into a beautiful park. It's faster to drive a car but you'd miss an awesome train ride. You can't fish in the park but if you drive up, there's great stream and lake fishing on...

    How does bear meat taste?

The spring bears I've killed in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Prince Of Wales and Kuiu island Alaska were great! Who thinks Alaska is froze over?

I live on the next island up from you. I see my family posting nasty weather pictures from down in the states and I can't believe it. It's nicer than last year on Afognak. It's been blowing like a dirty bugger the last few days though.

    Why is LR good?

Today I took a 40 mile boat ride out of our bay and through the ocean to a distant bay where I know deer come down to eat kelp. I set up on a beach at 826 yards from the other beach. I've been there before and set up targets to check my drops. I know my rifle and it's capabilities and never...

    Long Range (not)

I shot a spike elk in Idaho at 4 yards, a whitetail at eight feet and a Corsican ram 6 feet under the cliff I was standing on. Those were with a longbow. I also shot a fox at maybe 1 foot away. As I swung my shotgun towards it, I bonked it on the head. Scared the hell out of both of us. Shotguns...

Well done Ron. I like the rivets on the first knife. Yesterday I boned a Sitka blacktail with the same knife I got for Christmas when I was 12 (41 years ago). After looking at yours it looks like it's time for a new knife. For long distance dial 1-800-338-EDGE

    Another Wolf , Southern Utah

Maybe it's a younger wolf. I shot a wolf and I'm here to tell you, they're big! I'm not sure if they get 250lbs but damn they're hard to drag. A friend of mine shot one too. He said he was surprised how long it took to dig a hole big enough for it.
