    Javelina hunt

My son drew a youth javelina tag which is a statewide hunt for two months. We've never hunted them before. I think I know what part of the state we're going to hunt, but I'm looking for information on what to look for in the field and where to concentrate. Arroyos? water holes? hillsides...

    What Happened

Looking forward to the youth javelina hunt for my son though. Never pursued them before, but I think we have the whole state to hunt and a whole month for the effort. Will bring along some shotguns for quail and it will make a grand expedition.

    What Happened

I sure long for the days before we had to draw for deer. You could count on hunting with the same guys in the same area every year. Back when the units were designated by letters rather than numbers. I understand why it can't be that way anymore...but I do miss it.

    What Happened

I blanked out again on the draw. So did my daughter. My boy draw javelina which is nice. I'm a NR (live in El Paso) and I haven't drawn a deer tag in 5 years. Prior to that I drew for deer every year including the first two or three post SB 196 years. I mean every year. My kids drew youth...

    cow elk LO tags

I blanked out in the draw. I almost always draw a deer in a low quality unit, but not this time. My 3rd choice was about as low quality as it gets too. So now to plan B. I have a couple or questions about UW LO cow elk tags. 1. can a non-resident get one 2. are they season specific 3...

    Road out of Glenwood/Mogollon

By the way, not saying anything many of you don't already know, but there's a lot of elk around Willow Creek and Snow Lake. I think we saw about 70 in a 24 hour period. I'm very jealous of those of you with tags.

    Road out of Glenwood/Mogollon

Went in through Winston/Beaverhead and out today through Glenwood. That road is open but it's pretty rough. Took about two hours from Willow Creek to Glenwood.

    Road out of Glenwood/Mogollon

Going camping and fishing at snow lake this weekend. Is that road from Glenwood/Mogollon heading into the Gila still closed?

    Re: Sandhills Cranes

Thanks Joe. I think I'll try that. I'll let you know how it turns out. Do you grill, fry or bake them?

    Re: Sandhills Cranes

I have a few ducks in the freezer right now. How did you cook yours?
  14. S

    Re: Sandhills Cranes

They're fantastic. Nothing like duck or goose which are awful. My favorite way to cook them is the breast them out and put the meat in a crock pot with a can of cream of mushroom soup.

    Quail?

    Thanks.

    Quail?

El Paso. I saw a few out West of town while scouting for a dove spot, but not many. I'm thinking of venturing East toward the Guadalupes. It looks like they got more rain out there.
  17. S

    Quail?

Anybody been seeing many out there? I sure haven't.

    My CO Buck

You two have got to be some of the best hunters in the West. Every time you go you get a monster. Congrats to you both!

Got a 2nd rifle deer hunt next week and the moon will be the biggest supermoon in 70 years. Gonna be a tough hunt for sure.

    Unit 27 New Mexico

Nice buck! Private land? As to the illegal alien and drug smuggler issue. No doubt it's an issue. I didn't run into any, but I heard plenty of stories from other guys I ran into out there. There's even a sign as you enter the National Forest warning about such things. I slept with a pistol...

    Unit 27 New Mexico

I hunted muleys there 2 years ago for 3 days. The only ones I saw were on private land the day before season opened while driving in--2 does and a spike. I heard no shots and spoke to no hunter that was successful. I was hunting South of the Geronimo Trial road. I didn't see any muleys...

    Southern Mimbres access

Does anyone know if you can access the Southern end of the Mimbres range through the Berenda Ranch/Macho Canyon road or is that road blocked by landowners? I hunted some private land in that area 25 years ago and was hoping to go for a hike up in the National Forest there this Spring.

Pinon Pines hunting cabins in Datil

My daughter and I stayed at the Pinon Pines hunting cabins near Datil on our elk hunt. Nothing fancy, but clean with heat, a kitchen and a hot shower. Decent price too--$55 per night. It's in pretty easy range of units 16D, 16E, 15, 13 and probably the north part of 17.

Can't be good. I don't know why they don't put some ibex in surrounding mountains like the Cooke's or the Portrillo's. It would liven things up a bit.

    16D youth cow hunt

LAST EDITED ON Dec-24-15 AT 04:40PM (MST)[p]Thanks. I was plan on concentrating on the East side of the unit and Rael Springs is on that end. I didn't find alot of sign on my scouting trip, but I'm sure we'll find something. I'm thinking that the snow will push them down the hill a little.

    16D youth cow hunt

Leaving Saturday for my daughter's 16D youth cow hunt. It will be our last hunting/fishing trip together before she goes off to college. Looks like snowy weather is in store. Maybe it will push-em around a little. Here's hoping for success!

RE: RE: Snow on the ground??? I just got back from scouting for the same hunt for my daughter. Alot of snow up high and around Aragon, but it seems to be melting pretty fast.

    NM Unit 16 archery mulie

I just returned from a scouting trip in 16D for my daughter's upcoming cow elk hunt right after Christmas. Plenty of places to stay in Reserve. Datil might have some place as well. As for deer, I didn't even see a track and there was alot of snow on the ground.

    16D lodging

Thank you for all of the responses. The N-bar is closed at that time. I was able to find 2 motels in Reserve....the Frisco and Hidden Springs. They are operated by the same people and sound very hunter friendly as opposed to some B&B that you might run into. I booked a room with them...
