I want to get a new gopher gun before the snow melts, and was curious if anyone here uses the 17? ive always used either a .223 or .204 and dont want to lose the ability to shoot past 300 yards. is the 17 enough for this or should i look at centerfires?

The 17 is a great gun, but you will lose the ability of 300 yd shots.( you can take them at 300 but you need to be a real sound shooter and understand the ballistics of the bullet)other than that I really like my 17 and have taken plenty of prairie dogs at 100-200 yds.

best of luck,

I agree.
I have a .17HMR and love it for the pot guts, it opens them buggers up like a tuna can....but 300yds is really stretching it.

I've got the Marlin 917VS and I love it. Its a super nice shooting rifle. I used it back home for ground squirls and jackrabbits, and like was said before those little V-max or the TNT shells turn groundsquirls inside out. Its pretty loud for a little gun though.
